Marvel Studios officially announces a Ghost Rider movie starring Ryan Gosling. Directed by Shawn Levy, the MCU Ghost Rider reboot hits cinemas in 2028. Read on!

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is officially getting a supernatural shot of adrenaline. During Marvel Studios’ flagship Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, studio president Kevin Feige made one of the most anticipated announcements in recent franchise history: a standalone Marvel Studios Ghost Rider Ryan Gosling feature film is currently in development.

The reveal brought the house down, capping off years of intense fan speculation and actor enthusiasm. Slated for a 2028 theatrical release, the movie will be directed by Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) from a screenplay written by Jonathan Tropper.

For MCU fans who have spent over a decade waiting for the Spirit of Vengeance to ride into Earth-616, this standalone Ghost Rider movie represents a pivotal moment. It signals Marvel’s boldest step yet into the darker, occult corners of its expanding universe, bringing a premier Hollywood A-lister to helm one of comic book lore's most iconic antiheroes.

Ryan Gosling as Ghost Rider: Dreams to Reality

The casting of Ryan Gosling as Ghost Rider is one of those rare Hollywood alignments where fan-casting and actor ambition collide seamlessly.

Why Gosling Is a Natural Fit

Gosling’s affinity for playing brooding, quiet, driven men behind the wheel—demonstrated in modern classics like Drive and The Place Beyond the Pines—makes him uniquely qualified to embody the tormented soul of a motorcycle stunt driver. He possesses the rare talent to balance intense dramatic gravitas with dry, razor-sharp charisma, a dynamic essential for a character battling an internal demon.

A Long-Awaited MCU Debut

Unlike many superhero casting rumors, Gosling’s desire to play Ghost Rider was never a secret.

1. Public Manifestation: As far back as 2022, Gosling publicly stated that if there was one Marvel character he desperately wanted to play, it was Ghost Rider.
2. Feige's Approval: Kevin Feige responded enthusiastically at the time, noting he would love to welcome the Oscar-nominated actor into the franchise.
3. The Pitch on Set: While filming Lucasfilm’s upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter with director Shawn Levy, Gosling and Levy began pitching ideas for a fresh cinematic take on the character. That creative chemistry led directly to the official pitch approved by Marvel leadership.

About Ghost Rider: Marvel’s Flaming Antihero

To understand why this Marvel Studios Ghost Rider film is generating such massive excitement, one must look at the character's rich comic book heritage.

Origins and Key Characters

First debuting in Marvel Spotlight #5 in 1972, Ghost Rider was co-created by Roy Thomas, Gary Friedrich, and Mike Ploog.

1. Johnny Blaze: The original and most famous incarnation, Johnny Blaze is a daring motorcycle stunt rider who makes a desperate deal with the demon Mephisto to save his adoptive father’s life. When the deal takes a tragic turn, Blaze is cursed and bonded to the Spirit of Vengeance.
2. Danny Ketch & Robbie Reyes: Later comic runs introduced legacy mantle-holders, including Danny Ketch (who rides a futuristic hell-cycle) and Robbie Reyes (who drives a fiery 1969 Dodge Charger).

Powers and Abilities

As one of Marvel’s most formidable entities, Ghost Rider boasts terrifying supernatural abilities:

1. Hellfire Manipulation: The ability to generate, control, and project mystical fire that burns both body and soul.
2. The Penance Stare: Ghost Rider's signature weapon, which forces wrongdoers to experience all the pain, grief, and suffering they have inflicted on innocent people.
3. Hell Cycle & Fiery Chain: A supernatural vehicle capable of defying gravity and traveling across dimensions, alongside an indestructible, mentally controlled hellfire chain whip.

Previous Live-Action Adaptations: A Quick History

Ryan Gosling will be the second actor to lead a major feature film centered on the Spirit of Vengeance.

The Nicolas Cage Era (2007–2011)

Nicolas Cage famously portrayed Johnny Blaze in Sony Pictures' Ghost Rider (2007) and its 2011 sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. While the films achieved cult status for Cage’s unhinged energy, they received mixed-to-negative reviews and operated outside the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe structure.

Television Appearances

Following the reversion of film rights to Marvel Studios, Ghost Rider made a acclaimed television appearance in Season 4 of ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2016). Gabriel Luna played Robbie Reyes, bringing a fresh, grounded dynamic to the screen.

How the New MCU Version Will Differ

Unlike previous standalone movies produced under external studio mandates, this MCU Ghost Rider project is being built from the ground up inside Marvel Studios. Fans can expect top-tier visual effects, direct narrative integration with other MCU heroes, and a high-budget cinematic production.
