Empathy and Apathy
Empathy and apathy are contrasting concepts that describe emotional responses to others' experiences. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person, while apathy is a lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern.
"Empathy"; involves putting oneself in another person's shoes and understanding their perspective and emotions. It includes recognizing and understanding another person's feelings, as well as experiencing some of those feelings oneself. True empathy often leads to a desire to help or alleviate the other person's suffering.
"Apathy"; Apathy is a state of indifference or a lack of emotion, interest, or concern. It involves a lack of motivation or enthusiasm for things that would normally evoke an emotional response. While apathy can be a personality trait, it can also be a symptom of certain medical conditions.
In simpler terms: Empathy: "I understand what you're going through, and I feel for you." And Apathy: "I don't care about your problems." Essentially, empathy is about connecting with others' emotions, while apathy is about being disconnected and indifferent.
While seemingly contradictory, empathy and apathy can coexist, but not in the same way or to the same degree for all individuals. Empathy, the ability to understand and share the feelings of another, can be present even when someone experiences periods of apathy, a lack of feeling or concern. They say that "Empathy is a Trait" and "Apathy is a State". The modern world living in western hemisphere and part of western civilization is such a clear explanation of these two terms.
Both empathy and apathy can be influenced and even attained to some degree. While empathy is often considered an innate trait, it can be developed and strengthened through conscious effort. Apathy, often a symptom of various conditions, can also be addressed and mitigated through specific strategies. It shows that an individual may have a personality trait through genes and family upbringing and even by training and education. Similarly; the humans' may be conditioned to show apathy in certain situations.
A Real Life Example
The world most devastating genocide and ethnic cleansing is being carried out in Gaza, Palestine by Israel's IDF; yet its most denied in the world at large. The reasons can be many but the hollowness of modern world's human and animal rights considerations can be explained by the following example. This example will also explain the above stated two distinct concepts of empathy and apathy; so please read it carefully:-
My name is Hamed Ashour, from Gaza.
A year ago, I shared the story of a kind, loyal dog who became my companion.
What a lucky dog he turned out to be.
Our story made headlines in both Arab and international magazines.
More than 5 million people around the world read it.
It was translated into seven different languages.
Not long after, I was contacted by an animal rights organization in Dublin, Ireland.
They wanted to check on the dog’s health.
They asked for photos of the tent we lived in and guarded together.
I sent the photos.
What followed was overwhelming.
So much sympathy, so much concern—for the dog.
They genuinely explored ways to evacuate him from Gaza through partner organizations.
They wanted him to have a better life.
A cleaner place.
A wider sky.
But no one asked about me.
I was the one living in that torn tent.
A place not even suitable for a dog!
An humble Request for Readers
Do we really care for human rights and human emancipation? Do we really believe in the dignity of humans and respect for all lives and wish lasting peace for every one? If the answer is YES; then we must campaign for the honour, dignity and respect of humans, living in Gaza, Palestine. That's the least we can do for our fellow human beings.
