After the Invitation to Apply: Your 60-Day Plan for a Complete Express Entry Application

Boost your CRS score and get invited to apply for Canadian PR. Can X Global helps with Express Entry, FSWP, CEC & FSTP. Book a consultation today.

Receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) through Express Entry is a big moment, but it also starts a strict deadline. You have 60 days to submit a complete electronic application for permanent residence, and the quality of what you submit in those weeks decides whether your application is approved. Many refusals at this stage are avoidable, caused by missing documents, mismatched details or rushed uploads.

Check Your Eligibility Before Anything Else

The first step after an ITA is not uploading documents. It is checking that everything in your profile still matches your situation. Your application must be consistent with the information you gave when you were invited. If your profile claimed CLB 9 in English and one of your results is actually CLB 8, or if you claimed three years of work experience but your third year ends a month after the invitation date, you may not have the points you were invited with.

Recalculate your score using the actual documents you will submit. If your real score is below the cut-off for the draw you were invited in, you may be refused. In that situation, many applicants choose to decline the ITA. Declining sends you back into the pool and has no negative effect, as long as you still meet the program requirements. Submitting an application you know is weaker than your profile risks a refusal, and an incomplete or inaccurate application can be refused without the application fee being refunded.

The Documents You Will Need

Most applications include a passport for every family member, language test results, Educational Credential Assessment reports, employment reference letters, police certificates, proof of medical exam, digital photos, and identity and civil status documents such as birth and marriage certificates. Depending on your program and situation, you may also need proof of settlement funds, a provincial nomination certificate or proof of a job offer.

Employment reference letters are where many applicants struggle. IRCC expects each letter to be on company letterhead, signed by a supervisor or HR, and to include your job title, start and end dates, hours per week, annual salary and benefits, and a description of your main duties. The duties should broadly match the National Occupational Classification (NOC) code you claimed. If a former employer will not provide a detailed letter, a combination of other evidence, such as contracts, pay slips, tax records and a sworn affidavit, can sometimes fill the gap, with an explanation.

Proof of funds is needed for Federal Skilled Worker and Federal Skilled Trades candidates, unless they are already working in Canada with valid authorization and have a valid job offer. Bank letters should show the current balance and average balance over recent months, and IRCC generally expects the money to have been available for some time rather than deposited suddenly. Large recent deposits should be explained with supporting documents, such as a property sale deed or a gift deed.

Medicals, Police Certificates and Biometrics

Book your immigration medical exam with an IRCC-approved panel physician as soon as you receive the ITA. Once you complete it, you will receive a document confirming the exam, which you upload with your application. Results are usually valid for twelve months.

Police certificates are needed from every country where you have lived for six months or more since turning 18. These often take the longest, so request them immediately. If one cannot be obtained within 60 days, upload proof of your request with an explanation.

Biometrics, meaning fingerprints and a photo, are requested after you submit if you have not given them within the past ten years. You will normally have 30 days to provide them at an authorized service point.

Uploading Without Mistakes

Each upload slot in the online application accepts a single file of limited size. If you have several documents for one slot, combine them into a single PDF, clearly ordered. Label files sensibly, and make sure every page is legible. Blurry scans are a common reason for requests for more documents.

If a slot asks for a document that does not apply to you, upload a short signed letter explaining why, rather than leaving it empty. Some slots are mandatory, and the system will not let you submit without something in them.

Pay the fees at submission: the processing fee and the Right of Permanent Residence Fee. IRCC updates fees periodically, so check the current amounts. Paying the Right of Permanent Residence Fee upfront usually avoids a later delay.

Reviewing Before You Submit

Before you click submit, review every form line by line. Check that the dates of your work experience, education and address history have no gaps. Check that the names, dates of birth and passport numbers match the documents exactly. Make sure your personal history covers the last ten years without gaps, including periods of unemployment, travel or study.

Many applicants find it helpful to have a second person, whether a family member or a licensed consultant, check the application independently. Someone who has not been staring at the forms for weeks often spots inconsistencies immediately.

Finishing Strong

The 60 days after an ITA reward preparation more than speed. Applicants who start gathering employment letters, police certificates and proof of funds while still in the pool usually submit calmly and well before the deadline. Those who wait until the invitation arrives often rush and make avoidable mistakes.
