Update on Hantavirus

The news about the MV Hondius is pretty wild. It started as an Argentina cruise but ended up docking in the Canary Islands under a massive medical lockdown. The ship was hit by hantavirus—specifically the Andes strain. What makes this scary is that while most hantaviruses come from rodents, this one can actually spread person-to-person. So far, there have been eight confirmed cases and three deaths, which is a high fatality rate for such a small group.Right now, passengers are being flown home in isolation. The CDC has some Americans in quarantine in Nebraska, and Europe is doing the same with their citizens. The WHO is calling for a 42-day quarantine just to be safe because the virus takes forever to show symptoms. It’s a heavy situation, but health officials say the general public isn't at risk. It's mostly just a tragedy for the families on that boat.
