To Err is Human; To Repent is Divine
God Al-Mighty ALLAH is the creator and sustainer of the all and He has created us- the humans as special creation. He has bestowed special faculties and responsibilities upon the progeny of prophet Adam(AS). This write up "To Err is Human; To Repent is Divine" is about those humans who err and repent for salvation.
بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
In the name of ALLAH, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
To Err is Human; To Repent is Divine
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful; and He alone is sufficient. And He is so Gracious that He does not pull the ropes of any rebel despite being aware of all the evil deeds and ventures; until the grace period or until the promised destined time. It is surprising that filial mortal beings whose live span a short time rebel and perish, but those, who live around and watch failure of such souls, do not learn any lesson. Alas, such souls are confined to an invisible wall; that they remain mute; deaf and blind.
ALLAH Subhanahu Taala created all the creatures of the whole Universe; when He wanted and as He wanted and for whatever purpose He wanted. He created the angels, created the jinn and also created man and then made Adam a body and breathed His soul into him and made him superior to all the creatures and crowned him with the title of Ashraf al-Makhluqat (best of all the creations). It is said that the jewel of this crown is the brain (thinking mind) that possesses the art of perfect thinking and reasoning; the center of (Al-afeeda- place of divine thoughts ) is the heart and the ability to speak. ALLAH Almighty Himself has said in His Quran, "We have certainly created man in the best of forms" (Surah At-Tin-4). But the story of the son of Adam is very painful that he followed the path of his open and great enemy "Iblis / Satan" and began to seek greatness in rebellion against God / ALLAH by following Satan with great pride. The good deed of the son of Adam is that he repents after making a mistake. But some are the offspring and followers of Iblis; they remain proud sinners.
Allah, the Exalted, has clearly stated for such people in the Holy Quran, Surah An-Nisa (verse 115):
"And whoever opposes the Messenger (ﷺ) after guidance has become clear to him, and follows a path other than the path of the believers, We will leave him to that which he has chosen, and We will cast him into Hell, and what an evil destination it is".
All human beings who are the sons of Adam; are born from the womb of their mother and are forced to depend only on the care and mercy of their mother; and then they descend from her lap and pass through the ages of boyhood, adolescence and adulthood and reach the threshold of serious consideration at the age of forty. Every human being passes through this forty-year period differently. The Lord of the Universe wants the son of Adam to grow up from childhood, to go beyond the energy of boyhood, grace and beauty of adulthood, age of seeking love and be loved, from stages of worldly duties and positions, to finally age of serious considerations for recognizing the true essence of the "purpose of life" and his own value (a true believer of God), and to be rooted for the success of the life in hereafter.
"Then he (the mortal) moved on to the Qaseeda after the ghazal"
The above line is the opening verse of the Naat section of a Qasida (poetry for love of Holy Prophetﷺ) by the famous poet Mohsin Kakourvi, the meaning of which is that after writing the ghazal (lyric poem with love theme), the poet's pen has again turned towards the Qasida, because his mind (the free mind) is now ready for lofty divine topics like Naat or Medh of Holy Prophetﷺ, in which the intoxication of thoughts revolving around the candle of thought (the intoxicating liquor) prevails. That is, after enjoying the worldly pleasures, a person should turn towards the real purpose of life, the Qasida (for slaves and followers of the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ); which is a truly lofty topic; But as soon as a person walks on this journey; the agents of the devilish system create a crowd of worldly and pleasure-filled thoughts around him.
This article interprets and encourages every son of Adam in this world; who is struggling with some kind of creative process and mental and physical struggle; who walks on one path [i.e., the pursuit of the world] and moves towards another higher destination [the pursuit of love of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and for the service of ALLAH Almighty]; which is the real creative process. This process is the journey of exaltation from infancy to the Ashraf al-Makhluqat.
ALLAH Subhanahu wa Ta’ala created a kind of being called "Angel"; these angels are luminous and invisible creatures of ALLAH Almighty, who have been entrusted with various responsibilities; such as bringing revelation, recording deeds, providing sustenance and capturing souls. They are free from all kinds of sins and follow the commands of ALLAH. They are created from light and are invisible to human eyes, but can appear in any form by divine power. Angels do not disobey Allah's commands and are free from all kinds of small and big sins. They are kept free from food, drink or physical needs.
Jinn are also a creation of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala, who are different from humans. This genre of being called 'jinn' are invisible to human eyes, but they have common attributes with humans in intelligence and the choice of good and evil, they were created from the flame of fire; and they have their own world and nature. They are invisible creatures who are invisible to human eyes, as it is stated in the Quran that "they see you from where you cannot see them". Among the jinn are the devils (Satan devils - descendants of Iblis) that mislead humans; while some others are believers, who worship ALLAH Almighty. The jinn exist for the service of Allah, just like humans, but their character and way of life are different.
And We have created the jinn and humans only for Our worship. (Surah Adh-Dhariyat-56)
In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah Almighty says:-
O mankind, worship your Lord who created you and Those before you, that you may become righteous (21)
And it has been further stated that
Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion, and He has power over all things. He who created death and life, that He may test you as to which of you is best in deed, and He is the Honorable, the Forgiving. (Surah Al-Mulk: 1,2)
In Surah Yaseen, Allah says:-
O children of Adam! Did I not warn you not to worship Satan, for he is your open enemy?
And that worshipping Me is the straight path. (61-60)
ALLAH, the Exalted, the Highest, created us and is fully aware of our human weaknesses; Just as our ancestor Adam made a mistake; so we, the sons of Adam; are prone to mistakes; and no human being can remain in the highest state of faith every moment. So, in moments of weakness of faith, every human being can make a mistake; which can extend to the limits of "Shirk" / polytheism. Therefore, ALLAH, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, has kept the door of repentance open; so He has announced; Look at the message verse 53 of Surah Az-Zumar of the Glorious Quran gives us. It says;
"Say: O My servants who have transgressed against their own souls! Do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, He is the Forgiving, the Merciful."
And behold, We will surely test you with fear, and hunger, and loss of wealth, lives, and fruits. And give good news to those who are patient.... Al-Baqarah 155
The Messenger of ALLAH (ﷺ) said: “There are one hundred levels in Paradise, which Allah has prepared for those who strive in the way of Allah; the distance between two levels is as great as the distance between the earth and the sky. When you ask Allah (for Paradise), ask Him for "Paradise Firdus", for it is the best and highest Paradise.” Bukhari
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “The wise is the one who controls his soul and prepares for what is after death, and the foolish is the one who follows his soul and puts his hope in Allah.” (Tirmidhi, 2459)
The Lord of the Universe, Muhammad (ﷺ), said: “The one who knows his worth will never be ruined.”
O ALLAH! I ask You for every good that Your knowledge encompasses, and I seek Your refuge from every evil that Your knowledge encompasses. O Allah! I ask You for well-being in all my affairs, and I seek Your refuge from the disgrace of this world and the punishment of the Hereafter.
O the last hope of the believers, do not cut off our hopes. O the one who answers the calls of the supplicants, answer our calls. O the one who helps the believers, help us. O the one who loves the repentant, accept our repentance. May Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, grant us the servitude of our Master Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him); May Allah make us thoughtful and grateful for His blessings, patient in the face of hardships and difficulties, and helpful to one another. Amen.
The above line of the poem is a famous Qasida by Mohsin Kakourvi, and the complete verse is as follows:-.
"Then he went to the first qasida after the ghazal"
"What is the confused mind of the speaker in a whirl wind"
This poem shows the poet's artistic journey and change in thoughts, where after the ghazal he turns to the qasida. In which the poet is mentioning turning his pen towards the qasida after the ghazal, saying that the poet's mind is wandering in different thoughts and the pen slips out of his hand while writing verses. This qasida is for those sinners who stray far in the pursuit of this world; but then return due to the mercy of Allah Almighty; and they make concerted efforts for repentance. The abode of such travelers is in the shadow of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) because Allah Almighty has made Holy Prophetﷺ, the mercy of the worlds (peace be upon him); a refuge for the sinners. And our master Muhammad (peace be upon him) spreads his mercy and changes the soul of the sheltered son of Adam. Then the sinner repented person performs such remarkable deeds that the world is left speechless. The history of the last two hundred years of the lands of Pakistan, India and Bangladesh is a witness to such wonderous turn around.
"To err is human, to repent is divine" is a famous maxim emphasizing that making mistakes is an inherent part of being human, while repenting for one's own faults is a noble, God-given virtue. Humans are not perfect, mistakes, sins, and errors are natural occurrences in life. Repenting for one's own mistakes—is a "divine-guided" act, reflecting divine mercy and rising above ego. It highlights that imperfections allow for growth, and choosing mercy over anger represents a higher moral standing. The purpose of this essay is to encourage humility in acknowledging own mistakes and seek redemption from the grace of ALLAH under the umbrella of Prophet Muhammadﷺ
Remember "To err is human, to persist, devilish, and to repent divine- guided act".
In the following, let us now read selected lines translated from the Qasida of Urdu poet Mohsin Kakourvi, carrying the said message.
From the direction of Kashi (Banaras), the clouds (‘(Megha- special significance in Hindi and Sanskrit poetry) are moving towards Mathura (A sacred place for Hindus).
The lighting brings the Ganges' shower riding on breezes.
The trees of Cypress take a bath at Gokul (Home Town of Krishna Maharaj).
And taking bathe in the Yamuna, is also a long process.
Sometimes the boat of Crescent Moon sinks, sometimes it jumps out.
The ocean of blue is in turmoil due to turbulence.
The night and the day are in the darkness of the clouds.
Laila is in hiding, the face is covered with a blanket.
Tell the moon on the branch of the palm tree to sing orchestra.
Sing this ghazal to the young of country,
Caught in a strange whirlwind, sleep is dead,
the vision is unawakened, the scythe is frozen.
Why the lightning should not move two or four steps and turn back?
There it is such dark that even clouds are wandering;
Till the times Jummna is freezing, clouds are not likely to open,
It is the Ganges cloud that has taken an oath.
The map of the blowing heart reflects in lightning,
The washed outline of the cloud of water on the eyes,
The small sparkle of the impatient heart is the lightning,
There is a magical cloud of water on the eyes.
With its shortcomings, it should climb to a million skies,
The charity cloud that has descended from my eyes
No laughter, no play, the control of passion and tears
This is my heart, this is my liver, and the cloud is.
Its king Indar wine from inside the fairy house,
The wine song is the cloud of Kashan Kanhaiya.
Has it seen the cry and lament of Mohsin?
The clods would never thunder, would never rain.
"Then he (the mortal) moved on to the Qaseeda after the ghazal"
That the speaker's mind is confused and closed in a whirl.
Is wine the color of a flower? Is the candle the flower of the night of thought?
As he walks, the pen that passes from his hand comes out
The speaker has no knowledge of composition or spelling
The knowledge of composition of the poem has become all in vain
There is something else in the heart but something else comes out of the mouth
Words are meaningless and the meanings are all uncertain.
How much he has been unbound, how much he has wandered?
No temple has escaped him, no palace.
Sometimes he wanders on the Ganges, sometimes on the Yamuna.
Sometimes he passes on the Ghaghra, sometimes he sleeps in the chameleon
The wonderer soul spent a life in search of truth; and moved from places to places (deserts, mountains) of Muslim lands and the lands of Hindu worship in search of solace, and only hardened his search and got polished in the end.
Just look at the state of the ascension of speech;
The cup of Saturn in the hand, the glass of me under the armpit;
Falls Where did you fall, where did you put your feet?
That even your imagination cannot go, no matter where you go.
That is, you have reached the field of divine light (Noor) where;
The title of the cloud is the rain of lightning,
The angels' blessings (Drood) are continuous;
The place, where sea of glorification come from the God, the Al-mighty Himself.
The beautiful flower is the Messenger of Madani Arabia
The beautiful flower is eternal; the eternal turban
There is no one like him, nor is there any equal, nor is there any like him,
Nor is there any equal, nor is there any other like him, not even replaceable.
What has bent towards the Kaaba, which is the Qiblah of the cloud?
The cloud prostrates, the sleeping Tayyiba and the lying down
Leaving the idols of Hinduism and the idol house Tower
Today, the prayer cloud has been laid in the Kaaba
In the seven worlds, his preaching has ruled,
There was a thundering cloud of the his prophethood,
That is the status of Your’s shrine as such,
That even cloud comes out with a bowed shoulder.
Mohsin, take a journey now and pray a prayer of bounties,
That the dark cloud of acceptance / permission comes;
Your government is the highest, the most excellent;
This is the summary of my detailed and complete faith.
I wish that never should be free from your naat;
None of my verse, or of my Qaṭṭa, nor any Qasida, not a ghazal;
I have no support from anyone in religion or the world, but You;
Only your trust, yours strength and yours backing.
To my soul, with love, may say, Azrael;
That my dear soul, lets walk to Medina, lets go;
May at the time of death; there will be sign of intercession;
Don't you bother about tomorrow, you will be helped tomorrow.
Gabriel may say gently, "Yes, in the name of Allah"
You are the cloud, move from Kashi towards Mathura and land in Medina.
