Notably, it occurred along a fault system that traverses through Morocco known for generating earthquakes throughout history. The recent significant earthquake, in this area occurred in 1906 resulting in the death of over 12,000 individuals in Agadir due to a 6.4 magnitude quake.

The earthquake caused destruction and casualties in rural regions where many homes are constructed with mud bricks and are susceptible to collapse. Based on the reports the quake has claimed the lives of than 800 people and left over 10,000 injured. Numerous individuals remain missing or trapped beneath debris with efforts to rescue them. The earthquake also disrupted power and communication lines making it challenging to assess the extent of the damage. One of the areas severely affected by this event was Marrakech, a city that attracts tourists and holds UNESCO World Heritage status. The old city of Marrakech suffered damage to structures such as mosques, palaces, markets, and museums. Notably impacted was the Koutoubia Mosque dating back, to the century; its minaret and walls developed cracks as a result of this activity. This mosque is renowned for its brilliance and is considered a symbol of Moroccan identity.
