Spirit Airlines Carry-On Rules 2026: What You Need to Know

The spirit airlines carry-on baggage policy 2026 allows one free personal item that fits under the seat (18 x 14 x 8 inches). Full-size carry-on bags (22 x 18 x 10 inches) require an additional fee. Prices are lower when purchased during booking. Bags exceeding size limits may incur higher airport or gate charges.
Free Personal Item Allowance
All passengers flying Spirit Airlines are allowed one free personal item.
Personal Item Size Limit (2026)
Your personal item must fit completely under the seat in front of you and generally should not exceed:
18 x 14 x 8 inches (including handles and wheels)

Examples of acceptable personal items:
Small backpack

Purse

Laptop bag

Small tote

If your item exceeds these dimensions, it may be classified as a carry-on and subject to additional charges at the gate.
Carry-On Bag Rules
Unlike many traditional airlines, Spirit does not include a full-size carry-on bag in its standard fare. If you want to bring a larger bag that fits in the overhead bin, you must purchase a carry-on allowance.
Carry-On Size Requirements
A carry-on bag must not exceed:
22 x 18 x 10 inches (including wheels and handles)

Bags larger than this may need to be checked and could incur higher airport fees.
Spirit Airlines Carry-On Fees (2026)
Carry-on fees vary depending on when you purchase them:
During booking: Lowest price

After booking (online): Moderate price

At airport counter: Higher price

At gate: Most expensive

Because pricing can fluctuate by route and demand, it’s always cheaper to add your carry-on during initial booking. Waiting until you arrive at the airport can significantly increase costs.
Weight Limits
Spirit Airlines does not typically enforce a strict weight limit for carry-on bags, but your bag must:
Fit in the overhead bin

Be light enough for you to lift without assistance

If airport staff determines your bag is too large or heavy to fit safely, it may be required to be checked for an additional fee.
What Happens If Your Bag Doesn’t Fit?
Spirit agents may ask you to place your bag in a size-check bin at the gate. If it does not fit:
You will need to pay a gate bag fee

The bag will be checked to your final destination

Gate fees are usually much higher than pre-paid carry-on charges, so measuring your bag in advance is strongly recommended.
Bundles and Fare Options
Spirit often offers bundled options like:
Bundle It

Boost It

Go Big (varies by route)

These packages may include a carry-on bag, seat selection, and other perks. If you plan to bring luggage, a bundle can sometimes be more cost-effective than paying separately.
Liquids and TSA Rules
Carry-on items must also comply with TSA liquid restrictions, including:
Liquids in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 ml)

All liquids placed in a clear, quart-sized bag

Security rules apply to all airlines, including Spirit.
Smart Tips to Avoid Extra Fees
Here’s how to keep your carry-on costs low:
Use a properly sized personal item when possible

Measure your carry-on before leaving home

Prepay for carry-on bags during booking

Avoid overpacking bulky items

Check Spirit’s website for updated pricing

Minimal packing can help you travel without paying additional baggage fees.
Special Considerations
Certain items may not count toward your carry-on limit, such as:
Assistive devices

Mobility aids

Diaper bags (when traveling with infants)

Always confirm specific exemptions before traveling.
Final Thoughts
Understanding Spirit Airlines carry-on rules in 2026 is essential for budget-conscious travelers. While the airline offers affordable base fares, carry-on bags come at an additional cost unless included in a bundle.
To avoid last-minute fees, measure your bag, purchase carry-on allowance early, and review all fare details before heading to the airport. With proper planning, you can enjoy a smooth and cost-effective travel experience with Spirit Airlines.
