A Sacred Story from the Skanda Purana The Skanda Purana recounts many tales of Lord Kartikeya's wisdom, power, and devotion. One of the most empowering stories tells the reason Lord Kartikeya himself was dubbed the "Guru of Lord Shiva." The Narrative: Kartikeya Explains the Principle of “Om” One day, the devas and rishis had gone to Kailasha, where Parameshvara was explaining the meaning of the mantra “Om.” Kartikeya, still a young child, was listening quietly, but there was a smile on his face as his father expounded on the meaning of “Om.” When Parameshvara saw his son smile, he asked him, “Son, do you disagree with me?” Kartikeya replied, “Father, your teaching is correct, but there is a fuller meaning to “Om” than you have given.” Kartikeya explained that the mantra (text or sound) “Om” represents manifestation, maintenance, and destruction, but that it also refers to the silence beyond the three—this silence is the source from which “Om” arises too. When Shiva heard his son's explanation, he was moved. He bowed before his son, and said, “From this day forward, you will be called Swaminatha, the Guru of the Devas—he who has taught even his father.” How to Worship Lord Kartikeya First, take a bath, get clean, and wear clean clothes.
