وَٱخۡفِضۡ جَنَاحَكَ لِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ : lower your wings for the believers
Al Quran is the final Holy Book revealed upon the Last of Prophets Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). The Quran & Sunnah is the only source of holy guidance as it entails detailed instructions for each and every walk of human life. Here guidance from Quran for the followers of Islam (وَٱخۡفِضۡ جَنَاحَكَ لِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ : lower your wings for the believers) is discussed wrt an importance aspect of social bonding i.e. showing courteousness to fellow believers for better living from Quran and Hadith of Prophet ﷺ. This is an approved Jumma Khutba from the Sultanate of Oman and translated in English.
In the name of ALLAH, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
And lower your wings for the believers (be courteous to the fellow-believers).
Praise be to ALLAH, who has urged and encouraged humility, and condemned arrogance and everything that leads to it. I bear witness that there is no god but ALLAH alone, without partner, and I bear witness that our Master and Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, is the servant and Messenger of ALLAH, the most humble of people toward the believers, and the most eager for that which contains compassion and gentleness. May the peace and blessings of ALLAH be upon him, his family, and all his companions, and all those who follow his path until the Day of Judgment. This is the translation of the recited verses from Surah Al Hijr:
And We created not the heavens and the earth and all that is between them except with truth, and the Hour is surely coming, so overlook (O Muhammad SAW), their faults with gracious forgiveness. [This was before the ordainment of Jihâd holy fighting in Allâh's Cause] (85) Verily, your Lord is the All-Knowing Creator. (86) And indeed, We have bestowed upon you seven of Al-Mathâni (the seven repeatedly recited Verses), (i.e. Sûrat Al-Fâtihah) and the Grand Qur'ân[]. (87) Look not with your eyes ambitiously at what We have bestowed on certain classes of them (the disbelievers), nor grieve over them. And lower your wings (in tenderness) for the believers (be courteous to the fellow-believers). (88)
Surah Al Hijr – 85-88
O servants of ALLAH: fear ALLAH and adopt piety and obey ALLAH and be gentle with people who are compassionate, and treat them with all gentleness and kindness, for “gentleness is never in anything without beautifying it, and it is never removed from anything without disfiguring it.”
and speak kindly to mankind;
Surah Al Baqara – 83-Part
For goodness leads to Paradise.
O Muslims: Know - ALLAH has made humility beloved to you - that the wise person treats people - regardless of their race - in the best possible way, making no distinction between the strong and the weak, the rich and the poor. His role model is the Prophet, peacebeuponhim, about whom the Lord of Glory and Majesty says in Surah Al Qalam:
And verily, you (O Muhammad SAW) are on an exalted (standard of) character.
Surah Al Qalam – 4
So he is committed to the best and most beautiful morals with people, for this is the best of creation. ALLAH Almighty says about him in Surah Aal E Imran:
And had you been severe and harsh¬hearted, they would have broken away from about you;
Surah Aal E Imran – 159-Part
Here are Moses (AA) and Aaron (AA), peace be upon them, when God sent them to Pharaoh and addressed them with His words saying in Surah TaHa:
And speak to him mildly, perhaps he may accept admonition or fear (Allâh)."
Surah TaHa – 44
The noble verses have given attention to the matter of humility. ALLAH Almighty says in Surah Al Furqan, describing the believers:
And the (faithful) slaves of the Most Gracious (Allâh) are those who walk on the earth in humility and sedateness, and when the foolish address them (with bad words) they reply back with mild words of gentleness.
Surah Al Furqan – 63
And ALLAH commanded his prophet, peace be upon him saying in Surah Al Hijr:
And lower your wings (in tenderness) for the believers (be courteous to the fellow-believers). (88)
Surah Al Hijr – 85-88
He emphasized that Paradise is only attained by the humble, so He says in Surah Al Qasas:
That home of the Hereafter (i.e. Paradise), We shall assign to those who rebel not against the truth with pride[] and oppression in the land nor do mischief by committing crimes. And the good end is for the Muttaqûn (pious righteous persons - see V.2:2).
Surah Al Qasas – 83
The Sunnah of the Prophet، peace be upon him, confirmed all of this with clear hadiths. He said: “No one humbles himself before God except that God raises him up.”
Humility has manifestations, images, applications, and examples. One of its forms is lowering the wing of humility towards one’s parents and treating them in the best possible way. ALLAH Almighty says in Surah Isra:
And lower unto them the wing of submission and humility through mercy,
Surah Al Isra – 24-Part
One of its forms is the humility of man towards himself, so he does not see in himself that he is more pious than others, nor that he is more deserving of appreciation than others. ALLAH Almighty says in Surah Al Najam:
So ascribe not purity to yourselves. He knows best him who fears Allâh and keeps his duty to Him [i.e. those who are Al-Muttaqûn (pious - see V.2:2)].
Surah An Najm – 31-Part
That is why one of the righteous people said: “Humility is that you leave your home and do not encounter a Muslim without seeing him do you a favor.” Part of humility is patience in seeking knowledge. The seeker of knowledge should not be reluctant to ask if he is ignorant of something, and should not be too proud to apologize if he makes a mistake in a matter. Arrogance is rejecting the truth and belittling people. One must respect whoever asks him a question, not be arrogant towards him, and be patient without being haughty or rejecting the truth. ALLAH Almighty says in Surah Al Kahaf:
And keep yourself (O Muhammad SAW) patiently with those who call on their Lord (i.e. your companions who remember their Lord with glorification, praising in prayers, and other righteous deeds) morning and afternoon, seeking His Face,
Surah Al Kahaf – 28-Part
Part of humility is for a person not to be arrogant towards someone who is less knowledgeable, wealthy, or influential than him. “No one who has an atom’s weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.” A true Muslim must adhere to what is right, regardless of what it entails, even if the person doing it is young, poor, or weak. Indeed, man is legally obligated to return to the truth whenever it becomes clear to him. Here is Noah, peace be upon him, when the matter became clear to him, he returned to his Lord and sought refuge from his actions. This is described in Surah Hud:
Nûh (Noah) said: "O my Lord! I seek refuge with You from asking You that of which I have no knowledge. And unless You forgive me and have Mercy on me, I will indeed be one of the losers."
Surah Hud – 47
So fear Allah, O servants of Allah, and be the best of people in character, and the furthest from any haughtiness towards people. ((Whoever humbles himself before Allah, He will raise him up)), and ((The most honorable of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you)), and all of us are going to the dust, and the Day of Resurrection awaits us.
I say what you hear, and I ask forgiveness from God Almighty for me and for you, so ask forgiveness from Him and He will forgive you, for He is the Forgiving and Merciful, and pray to Him and He will answer you, for He is The noble righteousness
========================================================
Praise be to ALLAH, who has honored humility with reward and bestowed great bounty upon it. I bear witness that there is no god but ALLAH alone, without partner, and I bear witness that our Master and Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, is the servant and Messenger of ALLAH, the most respectful to others, and the best of them in observing ALLAH’s commandments in his public and private deeds. May the prayers and peace of ALLAH be upon him, his family, his good companions, and those who follow their path until the Day of Judgment.
How beautiful it is for a person to be humble towards others! He will meet them with joy, happiness, and cheerfulness, giving people their due, and treating them without haughtiness or arrogance. Humility has great effects and benefits, and among those benefits is Allah’s love for the humble. Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, described the believers in Surah Al Maeda by saying:
He will love and they will love Him; humble towards the believers,
Surah Al Maeda – 54-Part
What virtue is greater than the love of ALLAH? One of its benefits is that the humble person does not consider himself superior to others. If he is pointed out for a mistake, he will return and repent. Another of its benefits is people's love for the humble, because they are sociable and can be more sociable. One scholar said, "The fruit of contentment is comfort, and the fruit of humility is love." One of the effects of humility on society is that all members of society become eager to learn and progress. They will not refrain from working, nor will they be arrogant or see themselves as superior to others. Rather, each person will take the initiative to advance their country and the elevation of their society.
So fear Allah, O servants of Allah, and know that the best thing you can adhere to is noble and a pure character that will bring you reward and place your society at the forefront of nations.
So pray and send peace upon the leader of the messengers, Muhammad, the guide and trustworthy. Your Lord has commanded you to do so when He said: “Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, send blessings upon him and salute him with a worthy salutation.”
He says in Surah Al Ahzab: ALLAH and His kingdom send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, pray upon him and grant him peace.
Surah Al Ahzaab – 56
O ALLAH, bless and grant peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon the family of our Prophet Muhammad, as You prayed and peace upon our Prophet Abraham and upon the family of our Prophet Abraham, and bless our Prophet Muhammad and the family of our Prophet Muhammad, just as You blessed our Prophet Abraham and the family of our Prophet Abraham in the worlds. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. And be pleased, O Allah, with his Rightly-Guided Caliphs, and with his wives, the Mothers of the Believers, and with all the rest of the Companions, and with the believing men and women, and with this gathering of ours, by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.
Oh ALLAH, make this gathering of us a merciful gathering, and make our separation after it an infallible separation, and do not leave among us or with us any wretched or deprived.
Oh ALLAH, honor Islam, guide Muslims to the truth, unite their words in goodness, break the power of the oppressors, and grant peace and security to your servants. All of them.
O Allah, be a helper to our brothers in the blessed land of Al-Aqsa, be with them, strengthen them, strengthen their hearts, and grant them patience. Disappoint Your enemy and their enemy, and turn the tables on him, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor.
O Allah, we ask You for steadfastness in our affairs and determination to do what is right. We ask You for gratitude for Your blessings and proper worship of You. We ask You for sound hearts and truthful tongues. We ask You for the best of what You know and seek refuge in You from the worst of what You know. We seek Your forgiveness for what You know.
Oh ALLAH, O Ever-Living, O Ever-Living, O Possessor of Majesty and Honour, there is no god but You, Glory be to You, by You we seek refuge and by Your mercy we seek help, that you will not leave us to Our souls are within the blink of an eye, and nothing is closer than that. And rectify for us all our affairs, O Reconciliator, the affairs of the righteous.
Oh ALLAH, our Lord, protect our countries, honor our authority, support it with the truth, and support it with the truth, O Lord of the worlds. Oh God, bestow your blessing upon him, Support it with the light of your wisdom, guide it with your blessings, and protect it with your care.
O ALLAH, send down upon us from the blessings of the sky and bring forth for us from the goodness of the earth, and bless for us our fruits and our crops and all our provisions, O Possessor of Majesty and Generosity.
Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
O ALLAH, forgive the believing men and women, the Muslim men and women, the living and the dead among them. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the Near, the Answerer of supplications.
O servants of ALLAH - Indeed, ALLAH commands justice and good deeds, and bestows favor on relatives, and forbids indecency. And the denier and the transgressor admonish you that you may remember.
Surah An Nahl-90
