In spring 2026, our team atEvergreen Nursery in San Leandro focused on one of the most important pollinator conversations happening in California, protecting Western Monarch butterflies through native milkweed planting and pollinator-friendly gardening.

We have created an educational opportunity for local gardeners to learn how to help foster habitat for Monarch butterflies through our partnership with the San Leandro Public Library and their display “Monarchs & Milkweed: A Story of Survival”. While the display closed on May 30, 2026, our goal is still to assist in the survival of the Monarch population in San Leandro.

How One Milkweed Plant Became a Monarch Butterfly Habitat

Brenda Pineda, our store supervisor and nursery photographer at Evergreen Nursery, has an inspiring story about her new California Native Narrow Leaf Milkweed plant (Asclepias fascicularis). Brenda purchased the plant from our nursery and placed it on her home patio in San Leandro. She observed tiny white eggs on the leaves a couple of days after trans planting it into a large potted container.

After a couple of days of waiting, Monarch caterpillars began to appear. Since Monarch Butterflies only lay their eggs on Milkweed plants, it is highly likely that a female Monarch Butterfly visited Brenda's plant while it was still at the nursery. This is why native milkweed is considered a great plant for planting in Monarch Butterfly-friendly gardens in San Leandro.

The caterpillars that began hatching off the plant were very hungry and began rapidly eating the leaves. Even though it looked alarming for gardeners, the feeding process is completely natural and will not damage a well-established Milkweed. Milkweed is designed to provide for the Monarch caterpillars through all of their life stages.

In order to continue to feed the caterpillars, Brenda planted more Milkweed plants to help provide enough food for the caterpillars before going through metamorphosis.

The Magic of Monarch Metamorphosis

The caterpillars grew to their adult size, and once they reached full-size, they went into a chrysalis formation, inside a protective mesh butterfly house. So they had a safe habitat to develop away from any type of predators, such as household pets.

After a couple of weeks, the first Monarch butterfly was ready to emerge.

Brenda took that Monarch, which was the first of its kind, and released it at Evergreen Nursery’s pollinator garden in San Leandro, among various flowering nectar-producing plants that help bees, butterflies, and all the other pollinators.

These types of moments remind us that even one milkweed plant can be part of a much larger ecological cycle.
