Why Export Mac MBOX File to Outlook?

There are several reasons why users want to export their Mac MBOX emails to Outlook:

• Moving from Mac Mail or other MBOX-supported clients to Outlook for enhanced features and integration.
• Outlook offers robust email management tools, including calendar, contacts, and task integration.
• Outlook is widely used in business environments, making it necessary to convert MBOX files for professional use.
• Exporting emails ensures you have a backup in a more universally accepted format like PST.
• PST files (used by Outlook) are compatible across Windows and Mac Outlook versions, providing greater flexibility.

Manual Method to Export Mac MBOX File to Outlook

The manual process to export Mac MBOX files to Outlook involves multiple steps, as Outlook does not support direct MBOX import. You’ll need to use Apple Mail (or another MBOX-supporting client), Mozilla Thunderbird, and Outlook, depending on your Mac or Windows environment. Below is the most commonly used method involving Apple Mail, Thunderbird, and Outlook:

Step 1: Locate Your Mac MBOX File

• Open Finder and go to ~/Library/Mail/.
• Locate the folder containing your MBOX files, usually within subfolders named by account or mailbox.

Step 2: Add MBOX File to Apple Mail (if not already there)

1. Open Apple Mail on your Mac.
2. Go to File > Import Mailboxes.
3. Choose Files in MBOX format and click Continue.
4. Browse and select your MBOX file, then click Choose.
5. Imported emails will appear under a folder named "Import" in Apple Mail.

Step 3: Set Up Thunderbird with ImportExportTools NG Add-on

1. Install Mozilla Thunderbird on your Mac or Windows system.
2. Download and install the ImportExportTools NG extension:

• Go to Add-ons and Themes in Thunderbird.
• Search for ImportExportTools NG and install it.
• Restart Thunderbird after installation.

Step 4: Export Emails from Apple Mail and Import into Thunderbird

1. In Apple Mail, drag and drop emails or folders you want to export to your desktop — they will be saved in .eml format.
2. Open Thunderbird.
3. Create a new folder under Local Folders (e.g., “Imported Mail”).
4. Right-click the folder > ImportExportTools NG > Import All Messages from a Directory > Also from its Subdirectories.
5. Select the folder containing your .eml files. They will now appear in Thunderbird.

Step 4: Export Emails to Outlook (PST format)

Outlook does not support MBOX or EML import directly, so you will need to take one of the following approaches:

Option A: Use Outlook for Windows

1. Configure the same email account in Thunderbird and Outlook (IMAP enabled).
2. Copy all Thunderbird emails to the configured IMAP account.
3. Open Outlook (Windows), and let it sync.
4. Once synced, use File > Open & Export > Import/Export to export to a .pst file.

Option B: Drag & Drop (EML to Outlook)

1. Drag .eml files from Finder (Mac) or File Explorer (Windows) into an Outlook folder.
2. This method is not ideal for batch migration, and formatting/attachments may be lost.

Manual Method Limitations

• Time-consuming and not suitable for large mailboxes.
• Requires multiple email clients and tools.
• Risk of data loss, missing attachments, or broken formatting.
• No support for selective or batch conversion.
• Not beginner-friendly — some technical knowledge is required.
