FIFA WC 2026; Round of 16

The FIFA World Cup 2026 which started on 11 June 2026 has now been reduced from 48 teams to just 16; after the "Round of 32 Teams"; which was also the first knockout stage. The knockout stage is different from round robin league (group stage) as matches may be drawn in group stage; but in a knockout stage a decision is "must"; which requires the match to go to extra time (30 Minutes) and finally to "penalty shoots".

A total of 32 progressed through the group stage to reach the first knockout round, and half of those have now been eliminated. The Round of 16 is where things start to get really interesting. Most of the pre-tournament favorites are still alive, although Germany was shocked by Paraguay in the Round of 32, while the Netherlands also went home. Will we see any further surprises at this stage, or can we expected a quarterfinal lineup of all the remaining big guns?

Here's a look at the Round of 16 brackets for the 2026 World Cup:-

France vs Paraguay

Morocco vs Canada

Brazil vs. Norway

Mexico vs. England

Portugal vs. Spain

USA vs. Belgium

Argentina vs. Egypt

Switzerland vs. Colombia

How Soccer / Football have Changed over the Century?

The inaugural FIFA WC of 1930 was based on invitation and only 13 teams participated. The 1934 FIFA World Cup in Italy featured 16 national teams from four continental regions: Europe, South America, North/Central America, and Asia. The tournament marked the first time countries had to go through a qualification process. Thirty-two nations entered qualification, and 16 teams reached the final tournament. Then the FIFA 1934 World Cup Teams consisted of following composition:-

Europe (13): Austria, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, Germany (represented as West Germany in later tournaments), Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland

South America (01): Brazil.

North/Central America (01): Cuba

Asia (01): Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia)

Now let's compare the FIFA WC 1934; the 2nd Edition, full tournament's composition of 16 teams as shown above with the current 23rd Edition tournament FIFA WC 2026 Round of 16 Line Up. All 16 teams for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 are set by 03 July 2026. The final lineup features representatives from four confederations, with zero Asian (AFC) teams having advanced past the Round of 32. Here is the Round of 16 lineup categorized by region:-

Europe (UEFA - 7 teams): Belgium, England, France, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland

South America (CONMEBOL - 4 teams): Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay

North/Central America (CONCACAF - 3 teams): Canada, Mexico, USA

Africa (CAF - 2 teams): Egypt, Morocco

Asia (AFC - 0 teams): None qualified

Over the ninety two years of soccer development across the globe, nations other than Europe have improved many folds and this is evident from the above data. In 1934 there were 13 European teams along with one each of North Central America, South America and Asia and None from Africa. This 23rd Edition FIFA WC 2026 Round of 16 (after a gruelling 12 groups stage of 48 teams and first knockout stage of 32 teams) has only Seven UEFA teams, four South America teams, three North Central America Teams also the hosts), two Africa teams and None from Asia. The quality and standards of the game on the field has also shown some moments worth living in memories for centuries; with outstanding saves, brilliant tackles and unbelievable goals from acute angles and limited spaces between the defence lines.

The Round of 32 was monumental for the three North American co-hosts, all of whom survived their first knockout hurdles. Mexico; ended an agonizing 40-year drought by winning their first World Cup knockout match since 1986. They defeated a 10-man Ecuador side 2-0, erasing a historic eight-match losing streak in the Round of 32.

The Round of 32: Brilliance and Controversy

The opening knockout stage featured a treasure trove of brilliant goals, with three of the world's best alongside breakout stars dazzling fans:-

Lionel Messi (Argentina): Proved once again to be the clutch factor, dictating the tempo and setting up crucial areas in Argentina's hard-fought extra-time victory.

Kylian Mbappé (France): Showcased incredible footwork, dancing past a defender and flashing a pinpoint strike into the far corner.

Harry Kane (England): England's captain collected the ball on the edge of the box and unleashed a scorching, unstoppable shot to help push the Three Lions through to the next round.

Sidny Lopes Cabral (Cabo Verde) & Antonio Nusa (Norway): Both youngsters stepped up on the global stage, with Nusa jinking inside and curving a magnificent shot into the far corner against Côte d'Ivoire, while Cabral delivered an equally dazzling moment for his nation.

The crowning moment of the Round of 32 was Belgium’s miraculous 3-2 comeback against Senegal in Seattle, where the Red Devils overturned a 2-0 deficit in the final four minutes. The defining sequence was Romelu Lukaku’s spectacular 86th-minute flick, which sparked one of the most stunning turnarounds in international football history. Other unforgettable highlights that defined the Round of 32:-

Gabriel Martinelli's Heartbreaker: Brazil eliminated Japan in the 95th minute after Kaishu Sano had earlier put the Samurai Blue ahead.

Mexico’s Historic Victory: El Tri defeated Ecuador 2-0, marking their first knockout-stage World Cup win since 1986 and snapping a brutal eight-match losing streak in the Round of 32.

Co-Host Dominance: Canada and the USA both advanced, with Canada beating South Africa 1-0 and the USA defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0.

Canada took their time, but eventually advanced for the first time in their history as Eustaquio struck in the 92nd minute after a tight contest in Los Angeles that lacked the home energy of the group stages. South Africa controlled possession but rarely broke through Canada’s press, while the co-hosts created the better chances.

A disciplined Switzerland made history of their own, claiming a 2-0 victory over Algeria for their first knockout win in 88 years, with Embolo and Ndoye scoring early in each half.

Egypt perhaps wrote their names into the history books in the tensest fashion of all, beating Australia on penalties to claim their first knockout win. Ashour scored early, but wasteful finishing and Hany’s own goal, shortly after a concussion scare, brought Australia level and forced extra time. Even with Australia introducing veteran goalkeeper Ryan specifically for the shootout, Egypt held their nerve, winning 4–2 on penalties to book a clash with Argentina.

Major Upsets and Controversial Decisions

While one dramatic shootout created history, another produced one of the tournament’s biggest shocks, as Paraguay knocked out four-time world champions Germany 4-3 on penalties. Germany dominated possession and unleashed over 20 shots, but Paraguay’s defence held firm. From one of their few attacks, Enciso headed home just before the break to put the South American side in the lead. Havertz equalised early in the second half, and Germany thought they had won it through Tah in extra time, only for VAR to intervene just before the restart and rule it out for a soft foul on the keeper. That decision proved decisive, with Paraguay edging the shootout after misses from Havertz, Woltemade and Tah, despite a brief German lifeline through Sanabria’s miss and a Neuer save. The result triggered a reset for the European giants, with Julian Nagelsmann stepping down days later.

The VAR Decision Created Controversy

VAR (Video Assistant Referee) creates controversy because it applies microscopic, millimeter-level technology to subjective, human moments in soccer. The most controversial VAR decision in the FIFA 2026 World Cup occurred during the Round of 32 match between Portugal and Croatia. In stoppage time, Croatia’s Joško Gvardiol scored an equalizer, but VAR disallowed it after detecting a microscopic "hair flick" off an attacker in the build-up, sparking massive fan backlash. The disallowed Croatia goal caused intense debate among fans, players, and pundits because it relied on the tournament's new Connected Ball Technology rather than visible video replays. FIFA and match officials confirmed that the internal sensors in the official match ball registered the slightest contact, placing an attacking player in an offside position moments before the goal.

Portugal’s clash with Croatia brought even greater controversy. With the score at 1-1, Portugal retook the lead four minutes into stoppage time through a Ramos header. Croatia thought they had forced extra time moments later when Gvardiol slammed home amid chaotic scenes, only for a lengthy VAR review to rule the goal out after judging Pašalić offside due to a faint touch from Matanović detected solely by the ball’s microchip and none of the camera angles.

The decision sparked fresh debate over VAR’s use of ‘clear and obvious’ for touches imperceptible to the naked eye. With no time left to respond, the VAR decision marked a cruel ending to Croatia’s tournament and Luka Modrić’s iconic international career.

The Conclusion

The FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 delivered historic thrills; notably the tournament underdogs Cape Verde provided a shock by holding reigning champions Argentina to a 1-1 draw in regulation time, with Cape Verde's Sidny Lopes Cabral stepping up with a sensational equalizer. His brilliantly executed equalizer cemented his name on FIFA's top goal shortlist. Lionel Messi (Argentina): Showcased brilliant individual control and a composed finish to add to his World Cup scoring tally. The Round of 32 provided a fantastic slate of memorable matches and defining moments for underdogs and tournament favorites alike; and stage has been set for exiting Round of 16 stage leading to quarter finals.
