Dig Deep into Your Soul for Secret of Life

This essay in English and Arabic explores Allama Iqbal’s philosophy of Khudi (the Self) and his critique of secularism, where the separation of faith and politics leads to pure material greed. It connects his thoughts with Carl Jung’s psychological diagnosis of human flight from the self, and Amal Chatterjee's political critique of modern nations remaining "prisoners of empire." Ultimately, the text uncovers how historical autocracy hijacked the revolutionary message of Karbala, and challenges Generation Z to use the digital era to revive universal Islamic unity over sectarian divide.

In the name of ALLAH, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Sink Into Your Own Heart to Find the Secret of Life

Introduction

The Philosopher of the East, Allama Muhammad Iqbal, always used his philosophy and poetry to awaken humanity to its station of vicegerency (Khilafah) and the realization of its inner strength, known as Khudi (the Self). According to Iqbal, the primary cause for the decline of Muslim society—and humanity at large—is that humans have subjugated their spirit and morality to purely material systems. When the bond between religion and politics, or morality and power, is severed, society falls prey to naked greed, and individuals flee from the shadows of their own inner selves to seek refuge in external crutches.

The greatest challenge of today's digital world is the terrifying pace of material advancement, which has made humanity indifferent to divinely revealed truths and turned humans into worshippers of scientific miracles. Consequently, the modern individual has become a slave to worldly pleasures and carnal desires. The sheer abundance of material goods has robbed humanity of its inner peace and true purpose of existence. In such an intensely materialistic era, it has become absolutely vital to make humanity realize that the secret of life does not lie in any external material miracle, but is hidden deep within their own being—as beautifully captured by Iqbal:

Sink into your own heart to find the secret of life;

If you do not wish to be mine, so be it—at least become your own.

The Separation of Faith and Politics: The Reign of Material Lust

When fear of God, ethics, and a sense of accountability are expelled from any political, economic, or scientific framework, power and progress degenerate into a mere game of personal interest and brute force. Commenting on the soulless, secular system of the West and its worldly autocracy, Allama Iqbal noted:

The moment faith and statehood are separated,

Ruler and minister alike become creatures of pure greed.

Without the grounding of faith, the ruler (Amiri) becomes a tyrant, and his ministers and advisors (Waziri) become usurpers of public rights. Unless science and politics are subordinated to moral values, they remain nothing more than blind instruments of material lust.

Unfortunately, the entire Islamic world—which God Almighty had designated as the Ummat-e-Wasat (the Community of the Golden Mean) to stand as a witness of truth over other nations—has itself come to proudly wear the collar of captivity and intellectual enslavement. This bondage of thought and straying away from a glorious past has become the greatest tragedy of the Muslim world.

Colonial Structures and Mental Slavery: Amal Chatterjee's Perspective

This intellectual decline and slave mentality are witnessed not just by Eastern thinkers, but also verified by contemporary global scholars. Amal Chatterjee, a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, deeply investigates the deviation and slave mindset of former colonies—especially the Islamic world—in his acclaimed work, "Prisoners of Empire".

Chatterjee accurately points out that despite gaining superficial political independence, these nations remain mentally and structurally "prisoners of empire". Their political, educational, and economic systems still run on the very colonial and oppressive architecture left behind by foreign powers. Instead of awakening their Khudi and playing an active role as the Ummat-e-Wasat, the ruling elites of Muslim countries have embraced this yoke of slavery as a badge of honor, taking pride in the economic and intellectual exploitation of their own people.

The Root Causes of Intellectual Bondage: Imperialism, Clericalism, and Feudal Spiritualism

In his book Armaghan-e-Hijaz, Allama Iqbal laments this mechanical, spiritless decay where Muslims have forgotten their inner sovereignty and become enslaved to external idols:-

You were meant to inherit the vicegerency of both the manifest and the hidden;

Can a flame ever become a slave to mere twigs and dry grass?

No longer does that mirror-like clarity remain in your conscience,

O you, who are slain by Imperialism, Clericalism, and Feudal Spiritualism!

Iqbal startles the individual, asking: You were the "flame" (the warmth of faith) of the universe, how did you become a slave to "twigs and dry grass" (material glitter and colonial systems described by Amal Chatterjee)? What the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung diagnosed in 1944 as "mechanically repeating mystical texts" to avoid facing one's own soul, Iqbal terms the stagnation of Mullahism (clericalism) and Peerism (feudal spiritualism).

Iqbal masterfully exposed the three powerful forces that institutionalized and deeply rooted slavery within Islamic societies: Sultani (Imperialism), Mulla’iyyat (Clericalism), and Peeri (Feudal Spiritualism). Here, Sultani represents the entire tyrannical ruling class that imposes its will on the masses through the barrel of a gun and material might, bypassing constitutionality and ethics. When this oppressive autocracy gets the intellectual backing of shallow religious preachers (Mullas) and the ritualistic, action-negating traps of feudal spiritual guides (Peers), the three combine to massacre human conscience and Khudi, drowning society into a permanent quagmire of slavery.

The Historical Origin of Autocracy and the Antidote of Karbala

The deepest truth of history is that this tyrannical autocracy was not merely a byproduct of Western colonial rule; its roots sprouted from within Islamic history itself. This system of autocracy (Mulookiyat) began at the court of Amir Muawiyah and reached its absolute, aggressive peak in the court of Yazid, where the democratic and ethical principles of the Righteous Caliphate (Khilafah ar-Rashidah) were trampled to establish hereditary monarchy. It was against this very tyranny and autocracy that the greatest epic in human history, the Battle of Karbala, was fought. It was the ultimate, principled war waged by the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) against the separation of faith and politics.

Tragically, during the colonial era, a deeply calculated game was played to suppress this revolutionary message. Through the rise of Wahhabism in the Arab world and Deobandism (alongside other clerical schools of thought) in the Indo-Pak subcontinent, the grand revolutionary philosophy of Karbala was pushed to the background. It was either sacrificed at the altar of sectarianism or reduced to mere rituals of mourning and lamentation.

This cleric-sponsored mindset confined the entirety of Islam to a few personalized rituals, prayers, and soulless recitations, trapping the common Muslim in a desperate material race for basic survival—food, clothing, and shelter. It was through them that the cunning attitude of "the madman is clever in his own business" was spread; religious leaders appeared outwardly to stand against British imperialism, but were internally aligned with the ruling oppressors, leaving the emotionally charged common Muslim to be slaughtered. This exploitative cycle continues to this day, where Karbala—the ultimate antidote to tyranny—remains buried under a shroud of sectarianism.

Flight from the Self: Carl Jung’s Psychological Discovery

Interestingly, the roots of this material decay, indifference to divine truths, and historical slavery lie within humanity's internal psychological flight from the self. In 1944, the famous Swiss psychologist Carl Jung diagnosed this human behavior with profound precision:

"People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own souls. They will practice Indian yoga and all its exercises, observe a strict regimen or diet, learn theosophy by heart, or mechanically repeat mystical texts from the literature of the whole world—all because they cannot get along with themselves and have not the slightest confidence that anything useful could ever come out of their own souls."

Today's multi-billion-dollar "spirituality market," expensive yoga courses, and the blind pursuit of toxic positivity on social media are living proofs of Jung's words. Having become worshippers of material progress and autocratic clericalism, humans are terrified of facing their own inner jealousy, hypocrisy, and emptiness. To avoid this agonizing process of self-reckoning and the "duty of Hussain," they seek absurd external avenues and soulless rituals so they never have to transform their inner selves or stand up against injustice.

The Decline of the True Believer and the Lament of the Heavens

When a believer, crushed under the weight of material advancement or awed by colonial powers, forgets divinely revealed truths and fears worldly tyrants and gun-wielding elites instead of speaking the truth, it marks the ultimate downfall of humanity. In Iqbal's words:

A sorrowful sigh rises from the chest of the heavens,

When a man of truth becomes awed by kings and elites.

A true believer's head must bow before God alone. When they surrender to external powers and material illusions instead of facing their own soul, the cosmos itself mourns their degradation.

The Antidote to the Decline: Sinking Into One's Own Heart

Carl Jung’s "facing one's own soul," Amal Chatterjee’s "mental liberation from colonial captivity," [1] and Iqbal’s "sinking into one's own Khudi" are fundamentally different chapters of the exact same truth. Iqbal shuts down all escape routes of material and clerical evasion, calling humanity back to its core:

Sink into your own heart to find the secret of life;

If you do not wish to be mine, so be it—at least become your own.

Until human beings abandon the worship of materialism, the slavery of the gun, and soulless clericalism to bravely confront their inner darkness—until they cultivate a burning passion of faith in their hearts and purity in their vision—they can never be fearless conquerors over their base desires and oppressive rulers:

The heart is void of passion, the vision is not pure;

It is no wonder then that you are no longer fearless.

The universe belongs only to the daring believer;

He is no believer who does not belong to the Master of 'Lawlak'.

Conclusion: The Hope of Generation Z

The convergence of Iqbal, Carl Jung, Amal Chatterjee, and the historical truth of Karbala teaches us that true transformation and liberation from material, autocratic, or political slavery always begin from within. For an Ummat-e-Wasat trapped in the blinding flash of scientific progress, colonial mindsets, and sectarian clericalism, the only path to salvation is to exit the race of external dependencies and superficial, manipulated emotional slogans, and to sink deep into their own hearts. When an individual and a community recognize their Khudi and become masters of their inner selves in the light of the Prophet's legacy and the spirit of Karbala, they cease to be prisoners of tyranny; they become the leaders and guides of the universe.

In today's digital era, this is the age of Generation Z (Gen Z). For this generation, pioneering a new era of intra-Muslim unity is no longer an impossibility. This is an era of connection. To unite humanity, the universal and transcendental message of Islam can bind the entire Muslim world onto a single platform. However, to achieve this, Islam must be rescued from traditional, sectarian, and factional maneuverings, sectarian hatred, and autocratic agendas. In this age of hyper-connectivity, the youth must adopt the true, revolutionary, and intellectual principles of Karbala to break free from intellectual chaos, permanently ending the era of tyranny and mental slavery to lay the foundation of a unified, just, and equitable world.
