بَيْنَ الصَّوْمِ وَالزكاةِ: عِبَادَةٌ تُـهَذِّبُ الفَرْدَ وَتـَكَافُلٌ يَحْمِي الـمُـجْتَمَعَ : Between fasting and zakat:

Al Quran is the final Holy Book revealed upon the Last of Prophets Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). The Quran & Sunnah is the only source of holy guidance as it entails detailed instructions for each and every walk of human life. Here guidance from Quran for the followers of Islam (بَيْنَ الصَّوْمِ وَالزكاةِ: عِبَادَةٌ تُـهَذِّبُ الفَرْدَ وَتـَكَافُلٌ يَحْمِي الـمُـجْتَمَعَ : Between fasting and zakat: an act of worship that refines the individual and a form of solidarity that protects society) is discussed wrt fasting and zakat being two most important pillars of Islamic faith help foster brotherhood in society for better living from Quran and Hadith of Prophet ﷺ. This is an approved Jumma Khutba from the Sultanate of Oman and translated in English.

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the name of ALLAH, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

بَيْنَ الصَّوْمِ وَالزكاةِ: عِبَادَةٌ تُـهَذِّبُ الفَرْدَ وَتـَكَافُلٌ يَحْمِي الـمُـجْتَمَعَ

Between fasting and zakat:

An act of worship that refines the individual and a form of solidarity that protects society.

Praise be to Allah, who made fasting a purification of the soul and an elevation of the spirit, and made zakat a purification of wealth and an increase in reward. Thus, through them, the life of the servant is made upright in religion and worldly affairs. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad, peace be upon him, is His servant and Messenger, the most truthful of those who fast and the most generous of those who give charity. May the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him and his family, and his companions, and those who followed them in righteousness until the Day of Judgment. This is the translation of the recited verse from Surah Al Baqara:

 أَمَّا بَعْدُ، فاعوذ باللہ من الشیطان الرجیم- بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم 

وَمَثَلُ ٱلَّذِينَ يُنفِقُونَ أَمۡوَٲلَهُمُ ٱبۡتِغَآءَ مَرۡضَاتِ ٱللَّهِ وَتَثۡبِيتً۬ا مِّنۡ أَنفُسِهِمۡ كَمَثَلِ جَنَّةِۭ بِرَبۡوَةٍ أَصَابَهَا وَابِلٌ۬ فَـَٔاتَتۡ أُڪُلَهَا ضِعۡفَيۡنِ فَإِن لَّمۡ يُصِبۡہَا وَابِلٌ۬ فَطَلٌّ۬‌ۗ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ

And the likeness of those who spend their wealth seeking Allâh's Pleasure while they in their ownselves are sure and certain that Allâh will reward them (for their spending in His Cause), is the likeness of a garden on a height; heavy rain falls on it and it doubles its yield of harvest. And if it does not receive heavy rain, light rain suffices it. And Allâh is All-Seer of (knows well) what you do.

Surah Al Baqara – 265

O servants of ALLAH: Fear ALLAH and adopt piety and obey ALLAH, and know that we are living in the shade of a month which ALLAH has made a school for piety, and a field for purifying hearts and correcting deeds. ALLAH Almighty says in Surah Al Baqara:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ كُتِبَ عَلَيۡڪُمُ ٱلصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِڪُمۡ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَتَّقُونَ

O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting)[] is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqûn

Surah Al Baqara – 183

And so it was; for the path of piety became clearly manifest in this month with the revelation of the Qur’an, a guidance for mankind and insights for hearts. So He, Glory be to Him, says more in Surah Al Baqara:

شَہۡرُ رَمَضَانَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أُنزِلَ فِيهِ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ هُدً۬ى لِّلنَّاسِ وَبَيِّنَـٰتٍ۬ مِّنَ ٱلۡهُدَىٰ وَٱلۡفُرۡقَانِ‌ۚ

The month of Ramadân in which was revealed the Qur'ân, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong).

Surah Al Baqara – 185-Part

Then the impact of Ramadan did not stop at purifying the inner self alone, but extended to bear fruit in conduct and action. Thus, this month became an oasis of faith for giving and generosity, and our Prophet, peace be upon him, was the truest witness to this. Seyyedina Ibn Abbas, may ALLAH be pleased with him, narrated from the Prophet, may ALLAH be pleased with him, that he said: “The Messenger of ALLAH was the most generous of people, and he was at his most generous during Ramadan when…” Seyyedina Gabriel AlaihiSalam would meet him, and he would meet him every night of Ramadan, and they would study the Qur'an together, for the Messenger of ALLAH When Gabriel meets him, he is more generous with good than a blowing wind.

O Muslims: Fasting and zakat are two inseparable pillars in building a balanced Muslim personality; each strengthens the other, and each completes the effect of the other. If fasting purifies the soul, refines the self, and trains the heart to observe ALLAH by abstaining from permissible things, then zakat confirms this piety and brings it down from the level of feeling to the field of behavior and action. So whoever gives up his food and drink for the sake of ALLAH’s pleasure, then he is more deserving of giving up his surplus wealth out of mercy for ALLAH’s servants. ALLAH says in Surah Al Tawba 

خُذۡ مِنۡ أَمۡوَٲلِهِمۡ صَدَقَةً۬ تُطَهِّرُهُمۡ وَتُزَكِّيہِم بِہَا وَصَلِّ عَلَيۡهِمۡ‌ۖ إِنَّ صَلَوٰتَكَ سَكَنٌ۬ لَّهُمۡ‌ۗ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ

Take Sadaqah (alms) from their wealth in order to purify them and sanctify them with it, and invoke Allâh for them. Verily! Your invocations are a source of security for them, and Allâh is All-Hearer, All-Knower.

Surah Al Tawba – 103

It is proof of the sincerity of faith. It purifies the heart and increases its faith, which protects it from affliction. The Prophet, peace be upon him, says: “Charity is proof, patience is light, and the Qur’an is an argument for you or against you. Every person goes out in the morning and sells himself, either freeing himself or destroying himself.”

O servants of ALLAH: Indeed, Zakat is a pillar of the religion, an obligatory right on wealth, a cornerstone of a cohesive society, and a sound system that achieves justice and mutual support. ALLAH Almighty has ordained it, as He, Exalted is He, says in Surah Al Baqara:

وَأَقِيمُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُواْ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَٱرۡكَعُواْ مَعَ ٱلرَّٲكِعِينَ

And perform As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât), and give Zakât, and bow down (or submit yourselves with obedience to Allâh) along with Ar¬Raki'ûn.

Surah Al Baqara – 43

Paying Zakat is a sign of true servitude, an indication of the believer's steadfastness on the path of ALLAH, and a test of his trust in his Lord and Master. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) strongly warned against withholding Zakat, explaining that wealth whose due right is not paid will turn into torment and regret for its owner on the Day of Resurrection, instead of being a source of protection and blessing. Whoever's wealth reaches... The minimum amount of wealth that has been legally defined and has been held for a year becomes a trust upon him, to be paid in accordance with what ALLAH Almighty's law has defined, without transgression or negligence. The discerning Muslim must understand that there is a difference between obligatory alms (Zakat) and recommended charity (Sadaqah). Charity has a broad scope and wider reach; the servant is rewarded for it wherever he gives it seeking ALLAH Almighty's pleasure. Zakat, however, is an act of worship governed by specific rules and has designated recipients. ALLAH Almighty says in Surah Al Tawba:

إِنَّمَا ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتُ لِلۡفُقَرَآءِ وَٱلۡمَسَـٰكِينِ وَٱلۡعَـٰمِلِينَ عَلَيۡہَا وَٱلۡمُؤَلَّفَةِ قُلُوبُہُمۡ وَفِى ٱلرِّقَابِ وَٱلۡغَـٰرِمِينَ وَفِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبۡنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِ‌ۖ فَرِيضَةً۬ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ‌ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَڪِيمٌ۬

As-Sadaqât (here it means Zakât) are only for the Fuqarâ'[] (poor), and Al-Masâkin[] (the poor) and those employed to collect (the funds); and to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined (towards Islâm); and to free the captives; and for those in debt; and for Allâh's Cause (i.e. for Mujâhidûn - those fighting in the holy battle), and for the wayfarer (a traveller who is cut off from everything); a duty imposed by Allâh. And Allâh is All-Knower, All-Wise.

Surah Al Tawba – 60

Zakat should only be spent in accordance with these categories.

So fear ALLAH, O servants of ALLAH, and pay the zakat on your wealth willingly and gladly. Do not be among those who neglect zakat, or take it without entitlement, or transgress in giving it to those who do not deserve it. Whoever is in this state has betrayed his trust, neglected ALLAH Almighty’s right in his wealth, and hoarded his wealth without guidance.

أقولُ مَا تَسْمَعُونَ، وَأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ العَظِيمَ لِي وَلَكُمْ، فَاسْتَغْفِرُوهُ يَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ، إِنَّهُ هُوَ الغَفُورُالرَّحِيمُ، وَادْعُوهُ يَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ، إِنَّهُ هُوَ البَرُّ الكَرِيمُ

I say what you hear, and I ask forgiveness from ALLAH Almighty for me and for you, so ask forgiveness from Him and He will forgive you, for He is the Forgiving and Merciful, and pray to Him and He will answer you, for He is The noble righteousness

   الحَمْدُ للَّهِ عَلَى إِحْسَانِهِ، وَالشُّكْرُ لَهُ عَلَى تَوْفِيقِهِ وَامْتِنَانِهِ، وَنَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، وَنَشْهَدُ أَنَّ سَيِّدَنَا مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ الشَّاكِرُ لإِحْسَانِهِ، صَلاةً وَسَلامًا دَائِمَيْنِ إِلَى يَوْمِ الدِّينِ، وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ الطَّيِّبِينَ الطَّاهِرِينَ، وَمَنْ تَبِعَهُمْ بِإِحْسَانٍ إِلَى يَوْمِ الدِّينِ

Praise be to ALLAH for His favor, and thanks be to Him for His guidance and grace. We bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, without partner, and we bear witness that our master Muhammad, peace be upon him, is His servant who is grateful for His favor. May ALLAH’s prayers and peace be upon him, upon his family and good companions, and whoever follows their path until the Day of Judgment.

O servants of ALLAH: Zakat is a great obligation, through which wealth is purified, souls are purified, the needs of the poor are met, and the pillars of justice and solidarity are established in society. Part of understanding it completely is to perform it with excellence in its disbursement, with precision in its delivery, and with justice in its distribution. How many, a person who gives charity intended to do good but missed the point, and how many a needy person who is too proud to ask is deprived of his right because he does not ask and is not seen! The Prophet, peace be upon him, warned of the danger of transgression in this matter, saying: “Whoever takes charity without its due right is like one who withholds it.” This indicates that zakat is a trust that should not be spent without verification, nor should it be left to emotional reasoning that leads to imbalance and duplication.

Here, O servants of ALLAH, the role of the Zakat committees in the states becomes apparent; it is an organized institutional work, based on knowledge of those who are entitled, verification of their circumstances, enumeration, documentation, and balancing. So that the money reaches its rightful recipients fairly and justly, without duplication or duplication, and without randomness that accumulates zakat with one group while depriving other groups who are more deserving and entitled to it. Does this matter not deserve to be regulated? Shouldn't this obligation be preserved? That is why cooperating with these committees is cooperating in righteousness and piety, as our Lord, Glory be to Him, says in Surah Al Maeda:

وَتَعَاوَنُواْ عَلَى ٱلۡبِرِّ وَٱلتَّقۡوَىٰ‌ۖ وَلَا تَعَاوَنُواْ عَلَى ٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَٱلۡعُدۡوَٲنِ‌ۚ

Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression.

Surah Al Maeda – 2-Part

When you pay your zakat through it, hearts will find peace, obligations will be fulfilled, expenditures will be made sound, and goodness will abound among people. Thus, mutual support will be established, hardships will be lifted from needy households, and the needs of families who are too proud to ask for help will be met. At that time, the true meaning of the mercy foretold by the Prophet, peace be upon him, will be realized. By saying: “Whoever relieves a believer of a hardship from the hardships of this world, ALLAH will relieve him of a hardship from the hardships of the Day of Resurrection.” Pay your zakat to it, and support it with your trust and initiative, so that money may be preserved, gaps may be closed, and society may be established on mercy and justice that ALLAH loves and is pleased with, so that social security, which is one of the greatest objectives of Sharia, may prevail.

So fear ALLAH, O servants of ALLAH, and make this month a catalyst for giving and an impetus for self-reflection in fulfilling your obligation of Zakat, so that in giving it you may combine the best of times when deeds are multiplied, and the best of charity with which good deeds are multiplied, for ALLAH Almighty says in Surah Al Baqara: 

مَّثَلُ ٱلَّذِينَ يُنفِقُونَ أَمۡوَٲلَهُمۡ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ كَمَثَلِ حَبَّةٍ أَنۢبَتَتۡ سَبۡعَ سَنَابِلَ فِى كُلِّ سُنۢبُلَةٍ۬ مِّاْئَةُ حَبَّةٍ۬‌ۗ وَٱللَّهُ يُضَـٰعِفُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ‌ۗ وَٱللَّهُ وَٲسِعٌ عَلِيمٌ

The likeness of those who spend their wealth in the Way of Allâh, is as the likeness of a grain (of corn); it grows seven ears, and each ear has a hundred grains. Allâh gives manifold increase to whom He wills. And Allâh is All-Sufficient for His creatures' needs, All-Knower.

Surah Al Baqara – 261
