اليَقِينُ شِعَارُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ : Belief is the hallmark of the Believers

Al Quran is the final Holy Book revealed upon the Last of Prophets Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). The Quran & Sunnah is the only source of holy guidance as it entails detailed instructions for each and every walk of human life. Here guidance from Quran for the followers of Islam (اليَقِينُ شِعَارُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ : Belief is the hallmark of the Believers۔) is discussed wrt the most fundamental distinction of a believer is faith for better living from Quran and Hadith of Prophet ﷺ. This is an approved Jumma Khutba from the Sultanate of Oman and translated in English.

أَعُوذُ بِاللّٰهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the name of ALLAH, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

اليَقِينُ شِعَارُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ : Belief is the hallmark of the believers.

Praise be to Allah, who filled the hearts of His devoted servants with certainty, bringing tranquility to their souls and illumination to their inner vision. I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah alone, having no partner; He made certainty the provision for wayfarers, the light for the guided, and the source of strength for believers. I also bear witness that our Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, is the servant and Messenger of Allah—the most perfect of people in certainty and the greatest in reliance upon Allah. May peace and blessings be upon him, and upon his family and companions, whose hearts were filled with certainty; through it, hardships became easy for them to bear, and the landmarks of the faith were exalted.

O servants of ALLAH: Fear ALLAH and Adopt piety and obey ALLAH. To proceed: Fear Allah, O servants of Allah, and know that certainty (yaqīn) is the light by which the believer sees his path, the support that strengthens his heart, and the provision with which he traverses the paths of life—assured of Allah’s promise, content with His decree, and trusting in His wisdom. For this reason, Allah has elevated the status of those who possess certainty, placing them among the elite of His believing servants; as He—Glory be to Him—says at the beginning of Surah Al-Baqarah:

ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡغَيۡبِ وَيُقِيمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقۡنَـٰهُمۡ يُنفِقُونَ (٣) وَٱلَّذِينَ يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيۡكَ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ مِن قَبۡلِكَ وَبِٱلۡأَخِرَةِ هُمۡ يُوقِنُونَ

Who believe in the Ghaib[] and perform As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât), and spend out of what we have provided for them [i.e. give Zakât, spend on themselves, their parents, their children, their wives, etc., and also give charity to the poor and also in Allâh's Cause - Jihâd,]. (3) And who believe in (the Qurân and the Sunnah)[] which has been sent down (revealed) to you (Muhammad Peace be upon him ) and in that which we sent down before [the Taurât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel), etc.] and they believe with certainty in the Hereafter. (Resurrection, recompense of their good and bad deeds, Paradise and Hell,) (4)

Surah Al Baqara – 3-4

Given the exalted status of yaqīn (certainty of faith), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) guided his Ummah to ask Allah for it, saying: "Ask Allah for certainty and well-being; for no one has been granted anything better after certainty than well-being." Reflect on how he prioritized certainty; it is the source of spiritual well-being and the foundation of steadfastness. Through it, souls remain firm, hardships become manageable, and resolve is strengthened. It was the hallmark of the Prophets: consider Abraham (peace be upon him)—cast into a blazing fire, the trial served only to increase his certainty, and the danger only deepened his steadfastness. He declared, "Allah is sufficient for me, and He is the best Disposer of affairs," whereupon Allah’s command came to him as mentioned in Surah Al Anbiya

يَـٰنَارُ كُونِى بَرۡدً۬ا وَسَلَـٰمًا عَلَىٰٓ إِبۡرَٲهِيمَ

"O fire! Be you coolness and safety for Ibrâhim (Abraham)!"

Surah Al Anbiya – 69-Part

Then certainty precedes salvation, and makes coolness and peace from the heart of the fire. And this is the Messenger of ALLAH, Moses, peace be upon him, following in the footsteps of his father Abraham, peace be upon him, on the path of certainty. He stands in the position of the believer who is absolutely certain of his Lord, trusting in His support with the utmost confidence. There, on the seashore, Pharaoh's army pursues him from behind, and before him is a vast, surging sea. He says to him His followers from among the Children of Israel, as mentioned in Surah Al Shuara

إِنَّا لَمُدۡرَكُونَ

We are sure to be overtaken.

Surah Al Shuara – 61-Part

So he answers them with the certainty of the Messengers of firm resolve۔ He mentions in next verse

قَالَ كَلَّآ‌ۖ إِنَّ مَعِىَ رَبِّى سَيَہۡدِينِ

[Mûsa (Moses)] said: "Nay, verily! With me is my Lord, He will guide me."

Surah Al Shuara – 62

Thus, Allah saves him, just as He saved his forefather Abraham—peace be upon them both. Consider the leader of the certain in faith, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): when Quraysh drove him to seek refuge in the cave alongside his companion—who feared for the Prophet’s safety more than anyone else, to the point where anxiety had completely overwhelmed him—the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) poured certainty into his heart, saying to him, as mentioned in Surah Al Tawbah:

لَا تَحۡزَنۡ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَنَا‌ۖ

Be not sad (or afraid), surely Allâh is with us.

Surah Al Tawba – 40-Part

This, then, is the certainty of the prophets—the masters of the worlds and the leaders of the God-fearing and rightly guided. ALLAH says in Surah Al Inaam

أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ ٱلَّذِينَ هَدَى ٱللَّهُ‌ۖ فَبِهُدَٮٰهُمُ ٱقۡتَدِهۡ‌ۗ

They are those whom Allâh had guided. So follow their guidance.

Surah Al Anam – 90-Part

O Servants of Allah: When certainty takes firm root in the heart of a believer, it yields abundant goodness in their life. The servant who possesses such certainty knows neither anxiety nor the domination of baseless fears; for he understands that whatever has befallen him could not have missed him, and whatever has missed him could not have befallen him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught this profound concept, saying: "And know that if the entire nation were to gather to benefit you with something, they would not benefit you with anything except that which Allah has decreed for you; and if they were to gather to harm you with something, they would not harm you with anything except that which Allah has decreed against you." Likewise, certainty instills in its possessor contentment and submission to ALLAH’s decree; you see him pleased and pleasing to ALLAH, finding deep serenity in whatever his Lord has ordained for him. Among the fruits of certainty—honored believers—are courage and steadfastness in the face of shocks, and composure during times of hardship. How could one who aligns himself with ALLAH’s pleasure ever fear or panic? The person of certainty is courageous and commands respect—just as ALLAH describes the Companions of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) on the Day of Uhud, stating in Surah Aal E Imran :

ٱلَّذِينَ قَالَ لَهُمُ ٱلنَّاسُ إِنَّ ٱلنَّاسَ قَدۡ جَمَعُواْ لَكُمۡ فَٱخۡشَوۡهُمۡ فَزَادَهُمۡ إِيمَـٰنً۬ا وَقَالُواْ حَسۡبُنَا ٱللَّهُ وَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡوَڪِيلُ (١٧٣) فَٱنقَلَبُواْ بِنِعۡمَةٍ۬ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَفَضۡلٍ۬ لَّمۡ يَمۡسَسۡہُمۡ سُوٓءٌ۬ وَٱتَّبَعُواْ رِضۡوَٲنَ ٱللَّهِ‌ۗ وَٱللَّهُ ذُو فَضۡلٍ عَظِيمٍ

Those (i.e. believers) unto whom the people (hypocrites) said, "Verily, the people (pagans) have gathered against you (a great army), therefore, fear them." But it (only) increased them in Faith, and they said: "Allâh (Alone) is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us).[]" (173) So they returned with Grace and Bounty from Allâh. No harm touched them; and they followed the good Pleasure of Allâh. And Allâh is the Owner of Great Bounty. (174)

Surah Aal E Imran – 173-174

So fear Allah—O servants of Allah—and ask Him to grant you the certainty through which the calamities of this world are made light and the highest ranks of the Hereafter are attained. May Allah place me and you among those who possess certainty. Aameen

أقولُ مَا تَسْمَعُونَ، وَأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ العَظِيمَ لِي وَلَكُمْ، فَاسْتَغْفِرُوهُ يَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ، إِنَّهُ هُوَ الغَفُورُالرَّحِيمُ، وَادْعُوهُ يَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ، إِنَّهُ هُوَ البَرُّ الكَرِيمُ

I say what you hear, and I ask forgiveness from ALLAH Almighty for me and for you, so ask forgiveness from Him and He will forgive you, for He is the Forgiving and Merciful, and pray to Him and He will answer you, for He is The noble righteousness.

الحَمْدُ للهِ الَّذِي أَكْرَمَ أَوْلِيَاءَهُ بِالْيَقِينِ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ سَيِّدَنَا مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ، سَيِّدُ الْمُوقِنِينَ، وَإِمَامُ الْمُهْتَدِينَ، صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ أَجْمَعِينَ

Praise be to Allah, who has honored His devoted servants with certainty. I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah alone, having no partner, the Lord of the Worlds; and I bear witness that our master Muhammad, peace be upon him, is His servant and His Messenger, the master of the certain in faith and the leader of the rightly guided. May the blessings of Allah be upon him and upon all his family.

To proceed, O community of Muslims: If certainty is the believer’s provision on the journey toward Allah, how is this spiritual station cultivated within the heart? And how does the believer preserve it when trials intensify, doubts multiply, and tribulations become overwhelming? Allah—Glory be to Him—has not left His servants to grope for the path to certainty on their own; rather, He has opened its doors to them, guided them to the means of attaining it, and imbued each of those means with light for the heart and steadfastness for the soul.

Foremost among these reasons, O servants of Allah, is reflecting upon the signs of Allah. Allah—Glorified and Exalted be He—says, in Surah Adh Dhariyat:

وَفِى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ ءَايَـٰتٌ۬ لِّلۡمُوقِنِينَ (٢٠) وَفِىٓ أَنفُسِكُمۡ‌ۚ أَفَلَا تُبۡصِرُونَ

And on the earth are signs for those who have Faith with certainty, (20) And also in your ownselves. Will you not then see? (21)

Surah Adh-Dhariyat – 20-21

Whoever reflects and contemplates finds their heart filled with faith and experiences the cool serenity of certainty within their soul. He—Glory be to Him—say in Surah Fussilat:

سَنُرِيهِمۡ ءَايَـٰتِنَا فِى ٱلۡأَفَاقِ وَفِىٓ أَنفُسِہِمۡ حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَهُمۡ أَنَّهُ ٱلۡحَقُّ‌ۗ

We will show them Our Signs in the universe, and in their own selves, until it becomes manifest to them that this (the Qur'ân) is the truth.

Surah Fussilat – 53-Part

:

Furthermore, reflecting upon the verses of the Noble Quran is one of the greatest means of attaining certainty, just as Allah has stated regarding the believers—Glorified be He, says in Surah Al Anfal:

وَإِذَا تُلِيَتۡ عَلَيۡہِمۡ ءَايَـٰتُهُ ۥ زَادَتۡہُمۡ إِيمَـٰنً۬ا

and when His Verses (this Qur'ân) are recited unto them, they (i.e. the Verses) increase their Faith;

Surah Al Anfal – 2-Part

Engaging with the words of Allah—Glory be to Him—constantly keeping them as a companion, and deeply reflecting upon them serves to firmly root certainty within the heart. Likewise, keeping the company of the people of faith increases certainty; for their companionship renews one's faith and fosters remembrance of the Most Merciful. Among the most important means of attaining certainty is asking for it from the Bestower of certainty—Glory be to Him—for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say in his noble, recorded supplications:

اللَّهُمَّ اقْسِمْ لَنَا مِنْ خَشْيَتِكَ مَا تَحُولُ بِهِ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ مَعَاصِيكَ، وَمِنْ طَاعَتِكَ مَا تُبَلِّغُنَا بِهِ جَنَّتَكَ، وَمِنَ الْيَقِينِ مَا تُهَوِّنُ بِهِ عَلَيْنَا مَصائِبَ الدُّنْيَا

"O Allah, grant us a share of the fear of You that stands as a barrier between us and acts of disobedience toward You; a share of obedience to You that leads us to Your Paradise; and a share of certainty that makes the calamities of this world easy for us to bear."

These are some of the reasons for attaining certainty, so seize them, O believers, for certainty in times of tribulation is the lifeline, and it is the ark of Noah, peace be upon him, in the waves of life.
