Travel an Act of worship and reflection

Al Quran is the final Holy Book revealed upon the Last of Prophets Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). The Quran & Sunnah is the only source of holy guidance as it entails detailed instructions for each and every walk of human life. Here guidance from Quran for the followers of Islam (السَّفَرُعِبَادَةٌ وَتَـفَكُّـرٌ : Travel an Act of worship and reflection) is discussed wrt the travel is the way of worship and reflection for better living from Quran and Hadith of Prophet ﷺ. This is an approved Jumma Khutba from the Sultanate of Oman and translated in English.

In the name of ALLAH, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Travel is an act of worship and a means of reflection.

Praise be to Allah, who revealed the Qur’an as a written book and created the universe as a visible book. I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah alone, having no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad, peace be upon him, is His servant and His Messenger; may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, his family, and all his companions, as well as the Successors and those who follow them in righteousness until the Day of Judgment. This is the translation of the recited verses from Surah Az Zukhruf:

And Who has created all the pairs and has appointed for you ships and cattle on which you ride; (12) In order that you may mount on their backs, and then may remember the Favour of your Lord when you mount thereon, and say: "Glory to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could never have it (by our efforts)." (13) And verily, to Our Lord we indeed are to return! (14)

Surah Az Zukhruf – 12-14

O servants of ALLAH: Fear ALLAH and adopt piety and obey ALLAH, and journey across the earth with hearts that reflect and eyes that contemplate. For in travel, there are elements that awaken the essence of faith within the soul and reveal to the servant the wondrous craftsmanship of Allah and His magnificent providence—insights that deepen one’s certainty and submission.

O Believers: Travel is one of those experiences that broadens a person’s perspective on life and renews the spirit of contemplation and reflection. Along the journey, one witnesses the diversity of creation, the changing of circumstances, and the vastness of the earth—sights that awaken the heart and deepen its attachment to Allah. For this reason, Islam has accorded great importance to travel, prescribing specific supplications and etiquettes for the traveler to keep their heart connected to Allah while traversing roads and covering distances; thus, it has ordained that the traveler entrust their family to the care of their Lord. He would say: "I entrust you to Allah, with Whom nothing entrusted is ever lost." Prescribed for him, too, were supplications that fill the journey with serenity and reliance upon Allah—such as: "O Allah, we ask You for righteousness and piety in this journey of ours..." Then came the concessions of the Sharia, out of mercy and to provide relief: prayers were shortened, prayers were combined, and breaking the fast was permitted in cases of hardship—ensuring that the journey remained a path where worship is preserved and the connection with Allah is never severed. Islam further honored the traveler by designating his supplication as one that is answered. He said: "Three supplications are certainly answered: the supplication of the oppressed, the supplication of the traveler, and the supplication of a parent for their child." In all of this, the greatness of this religion is manifest; for it does not leave the traveler to loneliness and isolation, but rather envelops him in the company of remembrance, the shade of mercy, and a close connection with Allah the Almighty—transforming the journey for the believer into a gateway of faith and a source of profound reflection and insight.

Brothers in faith: Allah Almighty has commanded us to travel across the earth and reflect upon creation, saying—Glory be to Him—says in Surah Al Ankaboot:

Say: "Travel in the land and see how (Allâh) originated the creation,

Surah Al Ankaboot – 20Part

The most beautiful journeys are those that awaken the heart and stir within the soul a sense of contemplation and reflection. Amidst the stretching roads, the shifting landscapes, and the varying horizons, pages of Allah’s greatness are revealed to man—pages read not merely with the eye, but with the heart and spirit—as he journeys among towering mountains, flowing seas, and vast plains. He beholds a vast universe ordered by ALLAH's command, a diverse beauty testifying to the wondrousness of His handiwork, and precise laws pointing to the perfection of His wisdom. He senses that every path he traverses leads him to a deeper knowledge of ALLAH, and that every scene he encounters opens a new door in his heart to reverence and awe—all while witnessing the mercy, kindness, and divine care extended to all creation, whether human or animal. As for the diversity of languages, it is a marvel beyond all marvels. How many languages has ALLAH bestowed upon mankind, and how many forms of eloquence has He granted them therein! Yet, He knows the speech of every speaker, in every time and place. So too is the diversity of complexions, despite all originating from Adam and Eve. Glory be to Him who created with such wondrous artistry and delight, and blessed is He who says in Surah Al Room:

And among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the difference of your languages and colours. Verily, in that are indeed signs for men of sound knowledge.

Surah Al Room – 22

Another aspect of reflection during travel is observing and drawing lessons from the fate and ultimate end of past nations when passing through the lands of those who came before and witnessing their vestiges; for this is a Quranic objective and a divine injunction. Our Lord says in Surah Muhammad:

Have they not travelled through the earth, and seen what was the end of those before them? Allâh destroyed them completely and a similar (fate awaits) the disbelievers.

Surah Muhammad – 10

And at other times, He says in Surah Al Naml:

These are their houses in utter ruin, for they did wrong. Verily, in this is indeed an Ayâh (a lesson or a sign) for people who know.

Surah Al Naml – 52

Thus, dear and noble ones, contemplating the blessings ALLAH Almighty has scattered throughout the universe is one of the greatest avenues for reflection available to the traveler. Let the traveler observe how ALLAH—Glory be to Him—has subjected means of transportation to humanity, both ancient and modern, and how vast distances are now swiftly traversed, all while ensuring comfort, safety, and well-being.

Therefore, fear ALLAH —O servants of ALLAH —and make your journeys a vehicle for increasing your faith and drawing closer to your Lord; and beware of journeys involving forbidden acts, which ultimately turn into sources of grief and regret.

I say what you hear, and I ask forgiveness from ALLAH Almighty for me and for you, so ask forgiveness from Him and He will forgive you, for He is the Forgiving and Merciful, and pray to Him and He will answer you, for He is The noble righteousness.

Praise be to Allah, Who made good character an adornment for man, whether at home or while traveling. I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah alone, having no partner, and I bear witness that our master Muhammad, peace be upon him, is His servant and Messenger; he possessed the most perfect etiquette and the greatest character, both at home and on his journeys. May prayers and peace be upon him—enduring until the Day of Judgment—and upon his family, his companions, and those who follow them in righteousness until the Day of Judgment.

To proceed, O servants of Allah: Travel reveals aspects of a person's character that might remain hidden during ordinary days at home. It is on the journey that the true mettle of the soul is exposed; one’s patience and forbearance become evident, as does the quality of one’s conduct amidst fatigue, hardship, and changing circumstances. Thus, the believer carries their virtues with them wherever they go—maintaining their dignified bearing, good manners, gentleness toward others, and respect for the rights of those around them. For a traveler carries more than just their luggage; they also carry their faith, their values, and a reflection of their character. How often has a fleeting moment—on the road, at an airport, or in a social gathering—revealed a person’s noble upbringing and sincere faith? How often has a simple act left a positive impression or an unforgettable image in the minds of others? It is for this reason that Islamic teachings regarding travel encompass the highest moral virtues, enjoining gentleness, good companionship, and the avoidance of causing harm. Thus, it was said... "A Muslim is one from whose tongue and hand other Muslims are safe." He forbade harming people or causing them distress on their paths and in their public facilities, stating, "Gentleness does not enter into anything without adorning it." During his travels, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was a paragon of mercy and humility; he would assist his companions, lighten their burdens, and share in their affairs, ensuring that the journey remained an arena for virtuous conduct just as it was a means of travel.

Let the traveler be mindful of ALLAH regarding their conduct, and let them serve as an ambassador for their faith, their homeland, and their values; for while people may forget many words, they do not forget good character or noble actions. Indeed, it was said: "The most beloved of you to me, and the closest to me in seating on the Day of Resurrection, are those among you with the best character."
