الْقِيَادَةُ عَلَى الطَّرِيقِ؛ حُقُوقٌ وَآدَابٌ : Driving on the road؛ rights and etiquettes

Al Quran is the final Holy Book revealed upon the Last of Prophets Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). The Quran & Sunnah is the only source of holy guidance as it entails detailed instructions for each and every walk of human life. Here guidance from Quran for the followers of Islam (الْقِيَادَةُ عَلَى الطَّرِيقِ؛ حُقُوقٌ وَآدَابٌ : Driving on the Road; Rights and Etiquettes) is discussed wrt an important aspect of social life i.e. duites and rights while driving on the road for better living from Quran and Hadith of Prophet ﷺ. This is an approved Jumma Khutba from the Sultanate of Oman and translated in English.

Driving on the road... rights and etiquettes

Praise be to Allah, Lord of Lords, who made the path a legitimate right for mankind and beautified it with good manners. We bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, without partner, and we bear witness that Muhammad peace be upon him, is His servant and Messenger, the best of those who walked on the earth without doubt, and the best of those who clarified the rights of the path and were correct. May ALLAH’s prayers and peace be upon him, upon his family, his companions until the Day of Judgment. The recited verses and their translation are as follows:

Surah Al Anaam – 160

Surah Israa – 7-Part

Surah Al Qassas – 84

Surah Al Zalzala – 7-8

Surah Taha – 25-28

Whoever brings a good deed (Islâmic Monotheism and deeds of obedience to Allâh and His Messenger SAW) shall have ten times the like thereof to his credit, and whoever brings an evil deed (polytheism, disbelief, hypocrisy, and deeds of disobedience to Allâh and His Messenger SAW) shall have only the recompense of the like thereof, and they will not be wronged.

Surah Al Anaam – 160

ALLAH says in Surah Al Israa

(And We said): "If you do good, you do good for your ownselves, and if you do evil (you do it) against yourselves."

Surah Israa – 7-Part

ALLAH says in Surah Al Qasas

Whosoever brings good (Islâmic Monotheism along with righteous deeds), he shall have the better thereof, and whosoever brings evil (polytheism along with evil deeds) then, those who do evil deeds will only be requited for what they used to do.

Surah Al Qassas – 84

ALLAH says in Surah Al Zalzala

So whosoever does good equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant), shall see it. (7) And whosoever does evil equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant), shall see it. (8)

Surah Al Zalzala – 7-8

O servants of ALLAH: Fear ALLAH and Adopt piety and obey ALLAH and adorn your piety with righteous deeds, for this is the commandment of ALLAH, the Almighty, the Most High, to you and to the prophets before you. He says in Surah Al Mumenoon:

O (you) Messengers! Eat of the Taiyyibât [all kinds of Halâl (lawful) foods (meat of slaughtered eatable animals, milk products, fats, vegetables, fruits, etc.], and do righteous deeds. Verily! I am Well-Acquainted with what you do. (51) And verily! this your religion (of Islâmic Monotheism) is one religion, and I am your Lord, so keep your duty to Me. (52)

Surah Al Mumenoon – 51-52

O believers: ALLAH ALMIGHTY - Glory be to Him - has prepared for us the paths to facilitate our lives, and for us to use them to fulfill our needs. He has empowered creation to make them develop in every age to be in line with its requirements. And because the path is a right for everyone, then preserving it is a duty of faith and a divine method. The Prophet peace be upon him said, "Faith has seventy-odd, or sixty-odd, branches. The best of them is the statement to adopt, “There is no god but Allah,” and the least of them is removing something harmful from the road. Modesty is a branch of faith."

The wise Lawgiver has set road etiquette that Muslims should be aware of, and it is incumbent upon the wise person to abide by it when using the road. Official institutions, including the Royal Oman Police, have endeavored to preserve the rights of people on the roads, so they have written down laws, and everyone - equally - are responsible for applying these manners and implementing these laws۔ ALLAH says in Surah An Nisa:

O you who believe! Obey Allâh and obey the Messenger (Muhammad SAW), and those of you (Muslims) who are in authority. (And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allâh and His Messenger (SAW), if you believe in Allâh and in the Last Day. That is better and more suitable for final determination. (59)

Surah An Nisa – 59

O Muslims, Islam came to prevent harm to oneself and others. Seyyedina Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about the best deeds. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) listed a number of the best deeds to him. Seyyedina abu Dharr may ALLAH be pleased with him, then said, I further requested: O Messenger of Allah, what if I am unable to perform some deeds? He said: Refrain from harming people, for this is a charity from you to yourself. It is not hidden from you, O wise ones, that a Muslim must protect himself and others on the road, and not undertake anything that will bring harm to himself or to the people. A Muslim is one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe, and an real emigrant is one who abandons what Allah has forbidden. Among the things a person must beware of is reckless speeding or reckless driving that distracts drivers around him. Rather, a Muslim must walk slowly, with a reassured heart and calm limbs. Allah, the Almighty, says in Surah Al Furqan:

And the (faithful) slaves of the Most Gracious (Allâh) are those who walk on the earth in humility and sedateness, and when the foolish address them (with bad words) they reply back with mild words of gentleness. (63)

Surah Al Furqan – 63

One of the things that the nation is afflicted with today is that some people drive their vehicles while their minds and limbs are occupied with their mobile phones. Despite its importance in our lives, using it while driving leads to dire consequences. Some reliable studies around the world show that using a mobile phone while driving increases the incidence of serious accidents. It is a distraction from the road and distracts attention. No one should think that he is in control of himself while driving, and thus justify playing with his phone. Dangers come suddenly, and it may be difficult to guard against them for those whose minds are distracted from them. This leads to the killing of the soul and the loss of the lives of innocent people, as the individual exposes himself and others to danger. ALLAH Almighty says in Surah An Nisa

And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allâh is Most Merciful to you. (29)

Surah An Nisa – 29

And He, the Almighty, warns against the danger of taking people’s lives, as He, the Most High, says in Surah An Nisa

And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell to abide therein, and the Wrath and the Curse of Allâh are upon him, and a great punishment is prepared for him. (93).

Surah An Nisa – 93

O servants of ALLAH, fear ALLAH, and protect your souls and the souls of your brothers, and make your journey on the roads safe by following its rules and etiquette. ALLAH says in Surah Al Baqara

and do good. Truly, Allâh loves Al-Muhsinûn[] (the good-doers). (195)

Surah Al Baqara – 195-Part

I say what you hear, and I ask forgiveness from God Almighty for me and for you, so ask forgiveness from Him and He will forgive you, for He is the Forgiving and Merciful, and pray to Him and He will answer you, for He is The noble righteousness

Praise be to ALLAH, the Guide to the right path. We bear witness that there is no god but ALLAH alone, without partner. We bear witness that our Master Muhammad, Peace be upon him, is the Messenger of ALLAH, who conveyed the message of his Lord perfectly. May ALLAH’s prayers and peace be upon him, upon his family and good companions until the Day of Resurrection.

O servants of ALLAH: A person may find on the road someone who does not respect the laws and does not adhere to the rules of etiquette therein. However, a Muslim should not go too far if someone else transgresses against what is right. Rather, he must protect himself and control his emotions so that he and others may be safe. ALLAH Almighty says in Surah Al Maeda:

O you who believe! Take care of your ownselves, If you follow the (right) guidance (and enjoin what is right Islâmic Monotheism and all that Islâm orders one to do) and forbid what is wrong (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islâm has forbidden) no hurt can come to you from those who are in error. The return of you all is to Allâh, then He will inform you about (all) that which you used to do. (105)

Surah Al Maeda – 105

And be - O successful one - among those who begin their leadership with the remembrance of ALLAH, for it brings peace of mind and comforts the heart of man. Our Lord, the Possessor of Goodness, says in Surah Al Maeda:

Those who believed (in the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism), and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allâh, Verily, in the remembrance of Allâh do hearts find rest (28).

Surah Al Raad – 28

In the hadith on the authority of Seyyedina Abu Hurairah, may ALLAH be pleased with him, he said: The Messenger of ALLAH said: “A group of people do not sit in a gathering and do not remember ALLAH, except that there is a loss upon them, and there is no man who walks on a path and does not remember ALLAH, except that there is a loss upon him.”

This hadith shows the importance of remembrance and supplication for the traveler on the path. Then you - O people of virtue - are one body with your brothers, showing mercy to one another, and being compassionate to one another. You see the believers in their mercy, affection, and compassion for one another, like the example of a body; when one part of it is ill, the rest of the body responds to it with sleeplessness and fever. So advise one another in what will strengthen the uprightness of conduct in using the road, for you are the best of nations, says the Most Generous Lord in Surah Aal E Imran:

You [true believers in Islâmic Monotheism, and real followers of Prophet Muhammad SAW and his Sunnah] are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind; you enjoin Al-Ma'rûf (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism and all that Islâm has ordained) and forbid Al-Munkar (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islâm has forbidden), and you believe in Allâh.

Surah Aal E Imran – 110-Part

The Prophet peace be upon him said: If people see evil and do not change it, ALLAH is about to punish them all. So fear O servants of ALLAH, fear ALLAH in this matter. ALLAH says in Surah Al Maeda

O you who believe! Stand out firmly for Allâh as just witnesses and let not the enmity and hatred of others make you avoid justice. Be just: that is nearer to piety, and fear Allâh. Verily, Allâh is Well-Acquainted with what you do. (8)

Surah Al Maeda – 8

O servants of Allah, remember this command of Allah:

Say: "O 'Ibâdî (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allâh, verily Allâh forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Surah Az Zumr – 53

Surah Al Ahzaab – 56

So pray and send peace upon the leader of the messengers, Muhammad, the guide and trustworthy. Your Lord has commanded you to do so when He said: “Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, send blessings upon him and salute him with a worthy salutation.”

He says in Surah Al Ahzab: ALLAH and His kingdom send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, pray upon him and grant him peace.

Surah Al Ahzaab – 56

O ALLAH, bless and grant peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon the family of our Prophet Muhammad, as You prayed and peace upon our Prophet Abraham and upon the family of our Prophet Abraham, and bless our Prophet Muhammad and the family of our Prophet Muhammad, just as You blessed our Prophet Abraham and the family of our Prophet Abraham in the worlds. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. And be pleased, O Allah, with his Rightly-Guided Caliphs, and with his wives, the Mothers of the Believers, and with all the rest of the Companions, and with the believing men and women, and with this gathering of ours, by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

Oh ALLAH, make this gathering of us a merciful gathering, and make our separation after it an infallible separation, and do not leave among us or with us any wretched or deprived.

Oh ALLAH, honor Islam, guide Muslims to the truth, unite their words in goodness, break the power of the oppressors, and grant peace and security to your servants. All of them.

O Allah, be a helper to our brothers in the blessed land of Al-Aqsa, be with them, strengthen them, strengthen their hearts, and grant them patience. Disappoint Your enemy and their enemy, and turn the tables on him, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor.

O Allah, we ask You for steadfastness in our affairs and determination to do what is right. We ask You for gratitude for Your blessings and proper worship of You. We ask You for sound hearts and truthful tongues. We ask You for the best of what You know and seek refuge in You from the worst of what You know. We seek Your forgiveness for what You know.

Oh ALLAH, O Ever-Living, O Ever-Living, O Possessor of Majesty and Honour, there is no god but You, Glory be to You, by You we seek refuge and by Your mercy we seek help, that you will not leave us to Our souls are within the blink of an eye, and nothing is closer than that. And rectify for us all our affairs, O Reconciliator, the affairs of the righteous.

Oh ALLAH, our Lord, protect our countries, honor our authority, support it with the truth, and support it with the truth, O Lord of the worlds. Oh God, bestow your blessing upon him, Support it with the light of your wisdom, guide it with your blessings, and protect it with your care.

O ALLAH, send down upon us from the blessings of the sky and bring forth for us from the goodness of the earth, and bless for us our fruits and our crops and all our provisions, O Possessor of Majesty and Generosity.

Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

O Allah, forgive the believing men and women, the Muslim men and women, the living and the dead among them. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the Near, the Answerer of supplications..

Servants of God - Indeed, God commands justice and good deeds, and bestows favor on relatives, and forbids indecency. And the denier and the transgressor admonish you that you may remember.

Surah An Nahl-90
