Supplication is an education for the believers and growth for the soul.

Al Quran is the final Holy Book revealed upon the Last of Prophets Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). The Quran & Sunnah is the only source of holy guidance as it entails detailed instructions for each and every walk of human life. Here guidance from Quran for the followers of Islam (الدُّعَاءُ تَرْبـِيَةٌ لِلمُؤْمِنِ وَنَمَاءٌ لِلرُّوحِ : Supplication is an education for the believers and growth for the soul) is discussed wrt an important element of religion i.e. making prayers is training for self and enlightenment of soul, for better living from Quran and Hadith of Prophet ﷺ. This is an approved Jumma Khutba from the Sultanate of Oman and translated in English.

Supplication is an education for the believers and a growth for the soul.

Praise be to ALLAH who is close to His servants, who hears the supplications and answers to the believers. I bear witness that there is no god but ALLAH, He is alone and has no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad peace be upon him is His servant and His Messenger. He called upon his Lord and he remembered his Creator and he did the best. Blessings and peace be upon him, upon his family, companions, and those who follow him until the Day of Resurrection. This is the translation of the verse recited from Surah Al A'araf:

And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to ALLAH, so call on Him by them.

Surah Al A’araf – 180-Part

O people of Allah, fear Allah - adopt piety and obey ALLAH. As for what follows, fear ALLAH - O servants of ALLAH - and know that in our days there are signs of closeness to ALLAH and the servant’s recourse/turning to his Master, and nothing like supplication revives this closeness and the believer attains it. And the believer obtains the answer of his Lord when he calls upon Him. ALLAH describes this in Surah Al Naml:

Is not He (better than your gods) Who responds to the distressed one, when he calls on Him, and Who removes the evil, and makes you inheritors of the earth, generations after generations? Is there any ilâh (god) with Allâh? Little is that you remember!

Surah Al Naml – 62

Supplication is a form or an act of worship and one of the best means of communication between a servant and his Lord, and whoever looks at the verses related to fasting in the Book of ALLAH, will find that ALLAH Almighty, He included a verse related to the supplication, in that Allah says in Surah Al Baqara:

And when My slaves ask you (O Muhammad SAW) concerning Me, then (answer them), I am indeed near (to them by My Knowledge). I respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me (without any mediator or intercessor). So let them obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright.

Surah Al Baqara – 186

This tells us the close connection between fasting and supplication, as they are two great acts of worship, each one of which harmonizes with the other to elevate it. It brings the servant to the levels of acceptance and closeness to ALLAH Almighty, just as fasting is for ALLAH, He rewards him however He wishes. As stated in the Holy Hadith:

Every deed of the son of Adam is for him, except fasting. It is mine, and I will reward it.

For the supplication is the servant’s response to his master, and he knows that there is no one to answer it except Him. ALLAH Almighty says in Surah Al Baqara:

I respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.

Surah Al Baqara – 186-Part

Just as fasting is a submission of the soul to its desires, supplication is a means of showing our deficiencies to our Creator and our needs to Him. How not! Supplication is the key to the answer and the reason for achieving His closeness and our needs. ALLAH Almighty says in Surah Ghafir:

And your Lord said: "Invoke Me, [i.e. believe in My Oneness (Islâmic Monotheism)] (and ask Me for anything) I will respond to your (invocation).

Surah Ghaifr/Moamin –60-Part

It is no secret to the wise person that supplication has conditions and commandments that whoever wants to obtain an answer from ALLAH Almighty must fulfill them, and the first of these conditions is to turn to ALLAH Almighty with his supplication, sincerely to his Lord, Glory be to Him, intending thereby to fulfill the worship that his Lord has commanded him to do. ALLAH Almighty says in Surah Ghafir:

He is the Ever Living, Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), so invoke Him making your worship pure for Him Alone (by worshipping Him Alone, and none else, and by doing righteous deeds sincerely for Allâh's sake only, and not to show off, and not to setting up rivals with Him in worship).

Surah Ghaifr/Moamin –65-Part

The Muslim must bring with his supplication a good opinion of his Creator, so he should not say: Who am I that ALLAH should answer me? For the Prophet peace be upon him says:

ALLAH Almighty says: I am with him when My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him when he mentions Me. If he mentions Me to himself, I remember him to Myself, and if He mentions me in an assembly, and I mention him in a better assembly than them.)

This must be followed by the certainty that ALLAH will answer his call and fulfill his needs, and will not be in a hurry to obtain outcome of his supplications , says the Prophet peace be upon him.

The servant will still be answered, as long as he does not supplicate out of sin or severing ties of kinship, unless he is in a hurry, saying: I have supplicated and I have again supplicated, but it is not answered. Then he becomes sad and gives up supplication.

O, servants of ALLAH, fear ALLAH and be among His servants whom He praises as in Surah Sajda:

Their sides forsake their beds, to invoke their Lord in fear and hope, and they spend (in charity in Allâh's Cause) out of what We have bestowed on them

Surah As Sajda – 16

I say what you hear, and I ask forgiveness from God Almighty for me and for you, so ask forgiveness from Him and He will forgive you, for He is the Forgiving and Merciful, and pray to Him and He will answer you, for He is The noble righteousness

 ========================================================

Praise be to ALLAH, the Bestower, the Most Merciful. We bear witness that there is no god but ALLAH alone, with no partner, and we bear witness that our master Muhammad peace be upon him is the Noble Messenger of ALLAH, may ALLAH’s prayers and peace be upon him. May ALLAH bless him, his family and companions, the people of virtue and honor.

As for what follows, O servants of ALLAH: The believer’s commitment to the etiquette of supplication, and his preservation of its precise details, creates an effect on the soul, so starting with A person’s supplication is to praise and praise ALLAH Almighty, and his insistence on mentioning ALLAH ’s Most Beautiful Names and His Most High Attributes, and his choosing times when he is most likely to be answered, It stimulates the aspect of faith in ALLAH Almighty. Supplication is an act of recourse to the Creator, and an acknowledgment of one’s need and an acknowledgment of one’s lack. As the believing servant performs his deeds, he draws closer to ALLAH Almighty, but he remains fearful that it will not be accepted, so he responds to his Lord with supplication and again supplication as He says in Surah Al A'araf

Invoke your Lord with humility and in secret. He likes not the aggressors.

Surah Al A’araf – 55

Then the supplication is an entertainment for his heart and a strengthening for himself, and the more he insists on his supplication, hope is generated so that his heart is balanced between fear. And hope, the fear in his heart is nothing but a generator of action and an incentive to race in good deeds. God, Lord of the earth and the heavens, says in Surah Al Mumenoon:

And those who give that (their charity) which they give (and also do other good deeds) with their hearts full of fear (whether their alms and charities, have been accepted or not)[], because they are sure to return to their Lord (for reckoning). (60) It is these who hasten in the good deeds, and they are foremost in them [e.g. offering the compulsory Salât (prayers) in their (early) stated, fixed times and so on].

Surah Al Mumenoon – 60-61

So, O servants of ALLAH, fear ALLAH, and entreat ALLAH Almighty with supplication, fearing His punishment and hoping for His forgiveness, responding to His saying, Glory be to Him. He says in Surah Al A'araf

and invoke Him with fear and hope; Surely, Allâh's Mercy is (ever) near unto the good-doers.

Surah Al A’araf – 56-Part

Nothing can avert the judgment except prayer. That is, no one has the power to change Allah's decision but Allah Himself can change His decision, and this happens when a servant asks Him. Tirmidhi.

================================================================

Allah Ta'ala cares for His servant as much as he prays and accepts it

Say (O Muhammad SAW to the disbelievers): "My Lord pays attention to you only because of your invocation to Him. But now you have indeed denied (Him). So the torment will be yours forever (inseparable permanent punishment)." (77)

Surah Al Furqan – 77

The supplications of the Prophets (a.s.) are in fact a teaching on how to show people the straight path and establish a right connection with the true Lord. Adopting their life, we should also keep reciting these prayers in our daily life. Quran is a book of guidance. Like the sun, it gives light to every age, nation and generation so that people can walk on the path of guidance by taking help from the light, so let's take a brief look at the prayers of the Prophets (peace be upon them) quoted in the Holy Quran.

The prayer of Hazrat Adam (peace be upon him).

They said: "Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You forgive us not, and bestow not upon us Your Mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers."

Surah Al A’araf – 23

The prayer of Hazrat Nuh (peace be upon him).

My Lord! Forgive me, and my parents, and him who enters my home as a believer, and all the believing men and women. And to the Zâlimûn (polytheists, wrong-doers, and disbelievers) grant You no increase but destruction!" (28)

Surah Nooh – 28

It has been mentioned in Surah al-Mu'minun that when the people belied Hazrat Nuh (pbuh), he said:

Then he invoked his Lord (saying): "I have been overcome, so help (me)!"

Surah Al Qamar – 10

After that Allah Almighty revealed that O Noah! Build a boat before our eyes and set off at the appointed time and when you sit comfortably on the boat with your companions, give thanks to Allah and say:

And say: "My Lord! Cause me to land at a blessed landing-place, for You are the Best of those who bring to land."

Surah Al Mumenoon – 29

Mr. Noah said, "Your son is from my family and your promise to save the family is right." Then he said: O Noah, this boy is not from your family. This boy is a sinner, so do not ask me about that which you do not know. I advise you so that you do not become among the ignorant - Hazrat Nuh (A.S.) said:

Nûh (Noah) said: "O my Lord! I seek refuge with You from asking You that of which I have no knowledge. And unless You forgive me and have Mercy on me, I will indeed be one of the losers."

Surah Hood – 47

The prayer of Hazrat Ayyub (peace be upon him).

And (remember) Ayyûb (Job), when he cried to his Lord: "Verily, distress has seized me, and You are the Most Merciful of all those who show mercy."

Surah Al Anbiya – 83

The devil kept testing the patience of Mr. Ayub, he prayed to Allah. The devil has caused me great pain and suffering. He prayed to Allah.

And say (O Muhammad SAW): My Lord! Let my entry (to the city of Al-Madinah) be good, and (likewise) my exit (from the city of Makkah) be good. And grant me from You an authority to help me (or a firm sign or a proof).

Surah Al Isra – 80

At different places in the Holy Quran, Allah Almighty has given different teachings to His beloved Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa ﷺ.

Say (O Muhammad SAW): "O Allâh! Creator of the heavens and the earth! All-Knower of the Ghaib (unseen) and the seen. You will judge between your slaves about that wherein they used to differ."

Surah Az Zumr – 46

Allah Almighty teaches the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to pray in this way while answering the disbelievers of Tawheed in Surah Anbiya.

He (Muhammad SAW) said:"My Lord! Judge You in truth! Our Lord is the Most Gracious, Whose Help is to be sought against that which you attribute (unto Allâh that He has offspring, and unto Muhammad SAW that he is a sorcerer, and unto the Qur'ân that it is poetry)!" (112)

Surah Al Anbiya – 112

God teaches the Messenger of God to pray that the Messenger of God say:

And say (O Muhammad SAW): "My Lord! Forgive and have mercy, for You are the Best of those who show mercy!" (118)

Surah Al Mumenoon – 118

Even though our Prophet ﷺ is the wisest person among the creatures, Allah Ta'ala orders him to seek more knowledge from Allah while reciting this dua.

and say: "My Lord! Increase me in knowledge."

Surah TaHa – 114

Allah Ta'ala sometimes orders the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) to pray in this way

Say (O Muhammad SAW): "O Allâh! Possessor of the kingdom, You give the kingdom to whom You will, and You take the kingdom from whom You will, and You endue with honour whom You will, and You humiliate whom You will. In Your Hand[] is the good. Verily, You are Able to do all things. (26) You make the night to enter into the day, and You make the day to enter into the night (i.e. increase and decrease in the hours of the night and the day during winter and summer), You bring the living out of the dead, and You bring the dead out of the living. And You give wealth and sustenance to whom You will, without limit (measure or account).

Surah Aal E Imran – 26-27

Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah says that the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, "Whenever a person asks Allah for dua, Allah will either give him what he prayed for or prevent him from a similar calamity, provided that he does not pray for any sin or unkindness." Tirmidhi. There is a similar article in another hadith which was narrated by Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri RA from the Prophet SAW. In this, your statement is that whenever a Muslim makes a supplication, provided it is not a supplication for a sin or a disobedience, Allah accepts it in one of three forms. Either his dua is accepted in this world. Or it is reserved for reward in the hereafter. or a calamity of the same degree is prevented from befalling him- Musnad Ahmad

Hazrat Abu Huraira reported that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: When one of you asks for dua, he should not say, “O God, forgive me if you wish, have mercy on me if you wish, and provide me with sustenance if you wish.” Rather, he should say with certainty, “O God, fulfill such and such a need for me.” Bukhari - The second tradition has come from Hazrat Abu Huraira in these words that he said, "Supplicate to Allah with the belief that He will accept it." Tirmidhi

In another hadith, Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates this statement of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, that the supplication of a servant is accepted provided that he does not supplicate for any sin or tyranny, and does not act hastily. It was asked, O Messenger of Allah, what is haste? He said, "It is hasty that a person says, 'I prayed a lot,' but I see that my prayer is not accepted, and by saying this, the person gets tired and stops praying." Muslim

Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A.) narrated that the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) said, "There is nothing more valuable in the sight of Allah than supplication."

Hazrat Ibn Masoud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Ask Allah for His bounty, because Allah likes to be asked of Him.”

It is narrated by Hazrat Ibn Umar and Hazrat Muadh bin Jabal that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said that supplication is useful both in the case of the calls that have been revealed and also in the case of those that have not been revealed. So, O servants of God, you must pray - Tirmidhi. Musnad Ahmad

Surah Al Ahzaab – 56

This is what they prayed and greeted the Imam of the Messengers. Muhammad is the guiding and trustworthy. Your Lord has commanded you to do that when He said Indeed, ALLAH and His kingdom send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, pray upon him and grant him peace.

Surah Al Ahzaab – 56

O God, bless and grant peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon the family of our Prophet Muhammad, as You prayed and peace upon our Prophet Abraham and upon the family of our Prophet Abraham, and bless our Prophet Muhammad and the family of our Prophet Muhammad, just as You blessed our Prophet Abraham and the family of our Prophet Abraham in the worlds. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. And be pleased, O God, with his rightly-guided caliphs, with his wives, the mothers of the believers, with all the Companions, with all the believing men and women, By your mercy, O Most Merciful of the Merciful, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.

Oh God, make this gathering of us a merciful gathering, and make our separation after it an infallible separation, and do not leave among us or with us any wretched or deprived.

Oh God, honor Islam, guide Muslims to the truth, unite their words in goodness, break the power of the oppressors, and grant peace and security to your servants. All of them.

Oh God, O Ever-Living, O Ever-Living, O Possessor of Majesty and Honour, there is no god but You, Glory be to You, by You we seek refuge and by Your mercy we seek help, that you will not leave us to Our souls are within the blink of an eye, and nothing is closer than that. And rectify for us all our affairs, O Reconciliator, the affairs of the righteous.

Oh God, our Lord, protect our countries, honor our authority, support it with the truth, and support it with the truth, O Lord of the worlds. Oh God, bestow your blessing upon him, Support it with the light of your wisdom, guide it with your blessings, and protect it with your care.

May God bless you and grant you peace of mind. Blessings be upon you. May God bless you and grant you peace. Or Hamara, Sara Rizk, Jalal, or Izzat, Malik.

Oh God, my Lord, my heart, this world is my curse, and my hereafter is my curse, this world is a terrible torment.

Oh God! A believer is a Muslim, he is dead or his body is dead, he is dead or he is dead, he is dead or he is dead, he is close to you, his supplication is a religious answer or else he is dead.

Servants of God - Indeed, God commands justice and good deeds, and bestows favor on relatives, and forbids indecency. And the denier and the transgressor admonish you that you may remember. Surah An Nahl-90
