Good Tidings: An Act of Worship, a Source of Hope, and a Lasting Impact.

Praise be to Allah, who has given glad tidings of goodness to His believing servants, and who has ordained the ultimate outcome and success for the ALLAH-fearing. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, having no partner; He is the Protector of the righteous. I also bear witness that Muhammad, peace be him, His servant and Messenger—may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, his family, all his companions, those who followed them, and those who follow them in righteousness until the Day of Judgment. This is the translation of the recited verses from Surah Al Baqara and other Surahs:

Give glad tidings to As-Sâbirun (the patient) (155) Who, when afflicted with calamity, say: "Truly! To Allâh we belong and truly, to Him we shall return." (156) They are those on whom are the Salawât (i.e. who are blessed and will be forgiven) from their Lord, and (they are those who) receive His Mercy, and it is they who are the guided-ones.

Surah Al Baqara – 155-Part-157-2

Those who believed (in the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism) and emigrated and strove hard and fought in Allâh's Cause with their wealth and their lives are far higher in degree with Allâh. They are the successful.[] (20) Their Lord gives them glad tidings of Mercy from Him, and that His being pleased (with them), and of Gardens (Paradise) for them wherein are everlasting delights. (21)

Surah Al Tawba – 20-21-09

and glad tidings for those who have submitted themselves (to Allâh as Muslims).

Surah Al Nahl – 89-Part-16

And We have sent you (O Muhammad SAW ) only as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner.

Surah Al Furqan – 56-Part-25

for them are glad tidings; so announce the good news to My slaves.

Surah Az Zumr – 17-Part-39

Those who believed (in the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism), and used to fear Allâh much (by abstaining from evil deeds and sins and by doing righteous deeds) (63) For them are glad tidings, in the life of the present world[] (i.e. through a righteous dream seen by the person himself or shown to others), and in the Hereafter.

Surah Yunus – 63-64-Part-63

O servants of ALLAH: Fear ALLAH and Adopt piety and obey ALLAH. O Muslims, and make the act of bringing glad tidings a hallmark by which you are known and distinguished.

O Muslims: The term bisharah (glad tidings) refers, by convention, to conveying news that brings joy and benefit to the listener or the person being addressed. It is a means of bringing happiness to fellow Muslims and delighting the believing servants of Allah. Its importance and necessity become even greater during times of tribulation, hardship, distress, and adversity. Indeed, Allah the Almighty offered glad tidings to the believers following the events at the Battle of Uhud, as He—the Most Exalted of speakers—says in Surah Aal E Imran:

Think not of those who are killed in the Way of Allâh as dead. Nay, they are alive, with their Lord, and they have provision- (169) They rejoice in what Allâh has bestowed upon them of His Bounty, rejoice for the sake of those who have not yet joined them, but are left behind (not yet martyred) that on them no fear shall come, nor shall they grieve. (170)

Surah Aal E Imran – 169-170

It served as glad tidings for the families and loved ones of the martyrs, and as glad tidings for the believers who would come after them. Offering such glad tidings to those who endure trials and exercise patience is a noble Quranic approach—a principle firmly established by the Holy Quran in the words of the Almighty۔ He says in Surah Al Baqara:

but give glad tidings to As-Sâbirun (the patient) (155) Who, when afflicted with calamity, say: "Truly! To Allâh we belong and truly, to Him we shall return." (156) They are those on whom are the Salawât (i.e. who are blessed and will be forgiven) from their Lord, and (they are those who) receive His Mercy, and it is they who are the guided-ones. (157)

Surah Al Baqara – 155-Part-157

Islam has placed great importance on the concept of "good tidings" (bushra)—conveying positive, encouraging news—due to the profound, beneficial impact it has on both the individual and society. Such tidings bring joy to the heart, uplift the soul, and inspire one toward virtuous deeds. It is for this reason that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) advised his companions—and his entire Ummah (community) after them—saying: يَسِّرُوا وَلَا تُعَسِّرُوا، وَبَشِّرُوا وَلَا تُنَفِّرُوا - "Make things easy and do not make them difficult; bring glad tidings and do not drive people away." Furthermore, offering good tidings serves as an encouragement and a motivation to perform righteous acts and to remain steadfast in them. Our Lord—Exalted and Majestic is He says in Surah Al Isra:

Verily, this Qur'ân guides to that which is most just and right and gives glad tidings to the believers (in the Oneness of Allâh and His Messenger, Muhammad SAW). who work deeds of righteousness, that they shall have a great reward (Paradise).

Surah Al Isra – 9

and to give glad tidings to the believers (in the Oneness of Allâh Islâmic Monotheism), who do righteous - deeds, that they shall have a fair reward (i.e. Paradise).

Surah Al Kahf – 2

The glad tidings for the believers are not limited to the Hereafter; rather, they also receive them in this worldly life. A ḥadīth states: "Give glad tidings to this Ummah (nation) of splendor, high status, the [triumph of the] religion, victory, and establishment upon the earth." During the Battle of the Trench (al-Aḥzāb), while his companions were digging the trench, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave them the glad tidings that the lands of Persia and Byzantium (Rome) would be conquered. Before long, what he had foretold came to pass; these glad tidings served as a motivation for them to set out toward those lands and conquer them for the sake of Allah.

O Servants of Allah: The glad tidings of Allah’s mercy and grace open the doors of hope for the believer and inspire them toward righteous deeds and steadfastness. Whoever finds joy in Allah’s promise turns toward His obedience, and whoever hopes for His mercy strives to attain His pleasure. The glad tidings of the immense reward and abundant recompense that ALLAH has prepared for His servants serve as an incentive for action and a fruit for those who perform good deeds. We see these glad tidings promised at times to the patient, at other times to those who excel in doing good, and at yet other times to the humble and devout. Thus, those who possess faith and perform righteous deeds are the recipients of these great glad tidings—those who dedicate themselves to acts of devotion and goodness—for they are the ones who await the most beautiful tidings in both this world and the Hereafter. ALLAH says in Surah Fussilat

Verily, those who say: "Our Lord is Allâh (Alone)," and then they stand firm, on them the angels will descend (at the time of their death) (saying): "Fear not, nor grieve! But receive the glad tidings of Paradise which you have been promised!

Surah Fussilat – 30

This is the greatest of all glad tidings: the noble angels bring good news to the people of faith at the time of death—in those most difficult of moments—announcing to them Paradise, eternal happiness, the ultimate reward, and an even greater bounty.

Therefore, fear Allah—O servants of Allah—and remain steadfast in seeking what pleases Him; for that is the path to true success and the attainment of these glad tidings.

I say what you hear, and I ask forgiveness from ALLAH Almighty for me and for you, so ask forgiveness from Him and He will forgive you, for He is the Forgiving and Merciful, and pray to Him and He will answer you, for He is The noble righteousness...

All praise is due to Allah, from Whom comes every glad tiding, and to Whom is the ultimate end and the final return. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad, peace be upon him, servant and Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). May peace and blessings also be upon his family, his companions, and those who follow them in righteousness until the Day of Judgment.

O you who rejoice in the mercy of Allah, We ought to make this spirit of glad tidings a character trait that we embody in our daily lives. The simplest way to do this is to meet your brother with a cheerful and smiling face; for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Your smiling in the face of your brother is an act of charity." Another form of this positive, encouraging spirit is to support someone who is embarking on a righteous deed and to remind them of the immense reward that awaits them. The Companion ‘Utbah ibn ‘Abd al-Māzinī (may Allah be pleased with him) once gave glad tidings to a man who was heading to the mosque, sharing with him what he had heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): “There is no servant who leaves his home—whether in the morning or at any other time—to go to the mosque, but that one of his steps serves as an expiation [for his sins], and the other as a means of raising his rank [in Paradise].” Similarly, Mu‘ādh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) gave glad tidings to Abū Muslim al-Khawlānī when the latter told him that he loved him for the sake of Allah, saying: “Rejoice, if you are truthful! For I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say...” "Those who love one another for the sake of My Majesty shall have pulpits of light; even the prophets and the martyrs will envy them." How beautiful these radiant words are—prophetic glad tidings that bring great joy! Among the ways these glad tidings manifest within the Muslim community is by offering words of hope to the sick and those enduring trials. This was the practice of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his companions after him; when visiting the sick, they would sow seeds of hope and spread glad tidings—offering comfort and reminding them of the reward that Allah has stored up for those who remain patient. ALLAH says in Surah Az Zumr

Only those who are patient shall receive their reward in full, without reckoning.

Surah Az Zumr – 10-Pair

Shaddad ibn Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) visited a sick person to check on his condition and asked, "How do you find yourself this morning?" The man replied, "I am in a state of [Allah's] blessing." Shaddad said to him, "Rejoice, for this serves as an expiation for sins and a removal of misdeeds! I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: 'Allah—the Almighty and Majestic—says: "When I test one of My believing servants, and he praises Me for the trial I have placed upon him, he rises from his sickbed free of sins, just as he was on the day his mother gave birth to him." And the Lord—the Almighty and Majestic—further says: "I have confined My servant and tested him; therefore, continue to record for him the same [good deeds] that you used to record for him when he was healthy."'" Thus, the avenues for bringing glad tidings in our lives are vast. How many a kind word has restored hope to a troubled heart, and how many a sincere piece of good news has revived a soul weighed down by burdens! Offer glad tidings to your children—things that will motivate them toward diligence and righteousness—encourage those who engage in acts of virtue and benevolence, and console those enduring hardship with words that open doors of hope in God’s mercy. In your gatherings and your daily affairs, be a source of hope and joy, acting in accordance with the words of the Messenger of Mercy (peace and blessings be upon him): Make things easy and do not make them difficult; bring glad tidings and do not drive people away.

Therefore, fear Allah—O servants of Allah—and let the act of bringing glad tidings be your constant habit and inner disposition. Seek, through sharing good news with others, to be rewarded by Allah in kind; may He, on the day you meet Him, grant you the glad tidings of His mercy and pleasure, and of gardens containing everlasting bliss.

O servants of ALLAH, remember this command of ALLAH from Surah Az Zumr:

Say: "O 'Ibâdî (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allâh, verily Allâh forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
