aiwb holster wedge

An AIWB (Appendix Inside-the-Waistband) holster wedge is a small, typically foam or gel-based accessory that attaches to the back of a concealed carry holster. Its primary purpose is to improve both comfort and concealment, especially for those who carry in the appendix position (roughly 12-2 o'clock on the waistline). How it Works The wedge is designed to create a specific angle and pressure point. When you wear an AIWB holster, the gun's grip or "butt" can sometimes push away from your body, creating a visible outline or "printing." The holster wedge counteracts this by: Tilting the Grip Inward: By applying gentle pressure to the bottom (muzzle end) of the holster, the wedge pushes that part of the gun away from your body. This, in turn, pivots the top part of the gun (the grip) closer to your torso, significantly reducing printing. Improving Comfort: The soft, cushioned material acts as a buffer between the hard, rigid Kydex holster and your body. This helps to eliminate uncomfortable pressure points and hot spots, making all-day carry much more bearable. Key Benefits Enhanced Concealment: The most significant benefit is the reduction of printing. The wedge effectively "tucks" the gun's grip into your body, making it much more discreet, even with a larger firearm or under a fitted shirt. Increased Comfort: By providing a soft interface, the wedge helps prevent the holster from digging into your abdomen or hip bone, especially when sitting or bending. Improved Stability: The pressure from the wedge keeps the holster securely against your body, preventing it from shifting or moving around as you go about your day. This leads to a more consistent and reliable draw. Customization: Many AIWB holster wedges are attached with Velcro or an adhesive backing, allowing you to easily adjust the placement to find the optimal position for your body type and specific firearm. This trial-and-error process is key to finding the perfect balance of comfort and concealment. How to Use a Holster Wedge The placement of the wedge is crucial for its effectiveness. While you can experiment, a general rule of thumb is to place the wedge on the opposite side of your "printing" problem area. If the grip is printing: Place the wedge on the slide side of the holster. The pressure on the slide will cause the grip to rotate inward. If the slide or optic is printing: Place the wedge on the grip side of the holster. This will push the grip out slightly, causing the slide to rotate inward. You can also experiment with the wedge's height on the holster to find the sweet spot that provides the best contact with your body for optimal concealment and comfort. Many people use a "Holster Claw" in conjunction with a wedge for even better concealment. The claw works on the belt line to further rotate the grip into the body, while the wedge works on the holster itself to tilt the entire setup.
