Horizons of Provision in Believer’s Life
Al Quran is the final Holy Book revealed upon the Last of Prophets Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). The Quran & Sunnah is the only source of holy guidance as it entails detailed instructions for each and every walk of human life. Here guidance from Quran for the followers of Islam (آفَاقُ الرِّزْقِ فِي حَيَاةِ الْمُؤْمِنِ : Horizons of Provision in Believer’s Life) is discussed wrt the scope of earning livelihood by a Muslim for better living from Quran and Hadith of Prophet ﷺ. This is an approved Jumma Khutba from the Sultanate of Oman and translated in English.
In the name of ALLAH, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Horizons of Provision in Believer’s Life
Praise be to Allah, the Possessor of vast grace and generosity, the One who expands provision for whom He wills, and in Whose hand lie the treasuries of the earth and the heavens. I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah alone, having no partner; He bestows and grants, and He confers favors and kindness. I also bear witness that our master and prophet, Muhammad, peace be upon him, is His servant and His Messenger; he was grateful to his Lord, mindful of His grace, reliant upon Him, and ever striving to seek His pleasure. May the blessings, peace, and grace of Allah be upon him, his family, his companions, and all those who follow his guidance until the Day of Judgment. This is the recited verse from Surah Al Rad and its translation:
Allâh increases the provision for whom He wills, and straitens (it for whom He wills), and they rejoice in the life of the world, whereas the life of this world as compared with the Hereafter is but a brief passing enjoyment
Surah Al Rad – 26
O servants of ALLAH: Fear ALLAH and Adopt piety and obey ALLAH. To proceed: Fear Allah—O servants of Allah—and thank Him for His blessings; reflect upon the vastness of His bounty and the diversity of His gifts.
O believers: Allah—Glorified be His Majesty—says in Surah Adh Dhariyat:
Verily, Allâh is the All-Provider, Owner of Power, the Most Strong.
Surah Adh Dhariyat – 58
Al-Razzaq" (The Provider) is a magnificent name that opens horizons of hope within the heart and instills confidence in the vastness of Allah’s bounty; His treasuries are inexhaustible, and His favors flow continuously to His servants across every aspect of their lives. While the mind often turns to wealth when the subject of rizq (provision) arises, the concept is far broader and its scope much wider—encompassing physical well-being, national security, and family tranquility. The light of knowledge, righteous companionship, and the tranquility of the heart are all among ALLAH's bounties; yet the greatest of these are faith in Him and guidance toward Him. Through them, the servant comes to know his Lord, perceives the purpose of his life, and is guided to what brings well-being in both this world and the Hereafter. Thus, the believer lives amidst a vast array of gifts—some perceived by the eye, others felt by the heart, and some so familiar that their immense value often goes unnoticed.
Among those blessings—O servants of Allah—which a person may take for granted, failing to fully appreciate their worth, are health and well-being. One begins the day with a sound body, goes about one’s affairs with strength and vigor, and moves through life’s various situations without debilitating pain or the burden of illness. He might catch sight of someone possessing wealth or material goods and wish for a share of what they have; yet, upon realizing that the very person he envies is longing for the well-being and health that he himself already enjoys, his gaze shifts back to the blessings ALLAH has bestowed upon him, and he comes to understand that he possesses something beyond all price. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach his Ummah to ask ALLAH for well-being, saying: "Ask ALLAH for pardon and well-being; for no one has been given anything better than well-being after certainty of faith."
Servants of Allah: When the horizons of provision expand before the believer, he realizes that Allah—Glory be to Him—distributes sustenance among His servants with wisdom and knowledge; He grants abundance to one and restricts it for another, bestowing upon each whatever He wills, for He knows best what is truly beneficial for His servants. Thus, disparities in provision should not be a cause for discontent; rather, they should serve as a gateway to contentment, submission, and a good opinion of Allah. The believer remains certain that his Lord knows him best and is Most Merciful, and that He—Glory be to Him—expands and restricts provision with wisdom. The Almighty says in Surah Ash Shura:
And if Allâh were to enlarge the provision for His slaves, they would surely rebel in the earth, but He sends down by measure as He wills. Verily! He is in respect of His slaves, the Well-Aware, the All-Seer (of things that benefit them).
Surah Ash Shura – 27
This wisdom is manifest in aspects of life that baffle the understanding—among them, progeny. ALLAH Almighty says in Surah Ash Shura:
He bestows female (offspring) upon whom He wills, and bestows male (offspring) upon whom He wills. (49) Or He bestows both males and females, and He renders barren whom He wills. Verily, He is the All-Knower and is Able to do all things.
Surah Ash Shura – 49-Part-50
Reflect, then, on how Allah concluded this classification with His saying in Surah Ash Shurah:
He is the All-Knower and is Able to do all things.
Surah Ash Shura – 50-Part
......so that the heart may find reassurance in the knowledge that whatever befalls a servant occurs solely by the knowledge and power of Allah. How many a person has preoccupied his heart with what he has missed, while right before him lie manifold blessings—blessings which, if he were to view them with true insight, would fill his heart with praise and contentment.
Therefore, fear Allah, O servants of Allah, and broaden your perspective regarding the abundant provisions Allah has bestowed upon you. Do not let a distant wish distract you from the good that is present, nor let your aspirations for the future blind you to the honor Allah has already granted you. Reflect upon the words of your Lord—Glory be to Him, says in Surah Ibrahim:
And He gave you of all that you asked for, and if you count the Blessings of Allâh, never will you be able to count them.
Surah Ibrahim – 34-Part
So praise Allah for what He has given you, ask Him for blessing in what He has apportioned to you, and seek contentment with what He has decreed for you.
I say what you hear, and I ask forgiveness from ALLAH Almighty for me and for you, so ask forgiveness from Him and He will forgive you, for He is the Forgiving and Merciful, and pray to Him and He will answer you, for He is The noble righteousness..
Praise be to Allah, the Generous, the Provider; He bestows from His bounty and extends provision in His wisdom. I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah alone, having no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad, peace be upon him, is His servant and Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and upon his family, his companions, and those who follow them in righteousness until the Day of Judgment.
To proceed: O you who strive for your livelihood, The believer maintains a beautiful attitude regarding what Allah has apportioned for him: he strives for what he seeks, places his trust in his Lord regarding what he hopes for, gives thanks for what he has been granted, and is content with what has been decreed for him. Thus, reliance on Allah does not deter him from taking the necessary practical measures, nor does his striving distract him from the One who brings about all causes—Glory be to Him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) combined these two concepts in a magnificent parable, saying: If you were to place your trust in Allah as He ought to be trusted, you would be provided for just as the birds are: they set out in the morning with empty bellies and return with their bellies full. Reflect upon the state of the birds; they do not remain in their nests awaiting their sustenance, but rather set out in search of it, relying upon their Lord, and return having been provided for and fed by Allah. Just as striving is the way of the believer regarding what he hopes for, gratitude is his way regarding what he has been granted; he recognizes Allah’s bounty upon him and praises Him, utilizes what He has given in ways that please Him, and does not lose sight of the Bestower while being occupied with the gift itself. Allah has promised those who give thanks an increase, and warned them against denying His gifts and bounty; He, Glory be to Him, says in Surah Ibrahim:
And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed: "If you give thanks (by accepting Faith and worshipping none but Allâh), I will give you more (of My Blessings), but if you are thankless (i.e. disbelievers), verily! My Punishment is indeed severe."
Surah Ibrahim – 07
Let what Allah has bestowed upon you manifest as praise in your heart, commendation on your tongue, and obedience and benevolence in your deeds; for He—Glory be to Him—says in Surah Saba:
Work you, O family of Dâwud (David), with thanks!
Surah Saba – 13
How fitting it is that one who perceives the vastness of ALLAH’s provisions surrounding him should also expand his gratitude for them, and that his heart and tongue should ceaselessly praise the One who bestows them.
So fear ALLAH — O servants of ALLAH —and strive for the provision He has ordained for you; place your trust in Him with true reliance, thank Him for His bounties, be content with what He has apportioned to you, harbor good thoughts about your Lord, and rejoice in His grace; for He is the Provider, the Possessor of Power, the Mighty. May ALLAH make us and you among those who rely upon Him and give thanks, and may He bless what He has bestowed upon us and you.
